Steven Lewsley, granted Power of Attorney over his uncle with severe dementia in December 2021 along with his sister, stole £68,130 from two of his uncle's bank accounts starting from that time. He used the money to fund his gambling addiction, withdrawing £200 to £400 daily in cash, as well as spending on fuel, car parts from Euro Car Parts, and items from Wickes. The theft was discovered in autumn 2024 when the uncle's social worker noted suspicious transactions in bank statements from September 2023 to September 2024, including excessive unrelated spending and cash withdrawals, leading to concerns about unpaid care home fees. Leeds City Council conducted a financial assessment, and the matter was reported to police. Lewsley was arrested on April 5, 2025, and admitted the withdrawals were for gambling during his interview.

Sibtain Hussain, 32, from Bradford, targeted over 200 international applicants to UK universities by demanding payments for proof of ‘financial capability’, ‘student services’, and ‘accommodation deposits’. He created multiple phone numbers, email addresses, aliases and bank accounts to facilitate the scheme. In 2018, unauthorised access was gained to Lancaster University’s internal computer system and applicant data was stolen. Hussain, who began studying at the university in 2017, gained access to the stolen data and used it to perpetrate the fraud. He used the information to persistently target individuals by phone and email demanding sums up to £3,200. Over £48,000 was sent by 23 students as a result of Hussain’s efforts, but a large majority of payments were blocked by banks. The fraud had the potential to generate more than £493,000 in illegal profits.
Initially denied the charges but later pleaded guilty. Following a National Crime Agency investigation.

The victim suffered anxiety, migraines, prescribed medication, fear of going out alone, changed routes, and took time off work near the incident location.

The conversation lasted one week until the group confronted him at his property and alerted police, leading to his arrest. He had set messages to disappear after 24 hours, breaching his existing Sexual Harm Prevention Order from prior similar offending.

The abuse was first reported to police in October 2021 when one victim came forward as an adult. Police tracked down additional victims and arrested Pearce in 2022.

Around 6am, in a car park at Mulberry Way and St Christopher's Walk, she fell asleep on a ramp. Fretwell waited, then touched her over and under her clothing, and raped her for 12 minutes as captured on CCTV. She woke during the assault, pretended to sleep, and he stopped. He then assaulted her by penetration. To cover his actions, he repositioned bottles and lay down as if asleep, pointing out the CCTV camera. The girl later reported the incident to her mother and police.
Found guilty of assault by penetration at initial trial and rape at retrial. Mitigating factors included autism spectrum disorder, mixed depressive anxiety disorder, and no prior sexual convictions. Judge noted the victim was vulnerable and highlighted the defendant's failure to accept guilt.

Marie Thompson, a former South Yorkshire Police officer, blackmailed a man she had arrested in October 2022 on suspicion of possessing indecent images of children. She posed as a paedophile hunter using a fake ProtonMail email address and demanded £3,500 from him, providing bank details. The email threatened to expose his arrest unless payment was made as a 'donation'. When the man reported the blackmail to her, Thompson, who was investigating his original case, lied about being unable to trace the perpetrator, falsified reports, and used her personal phone number disguised in records. She sent a follow-up email attempting to cover her tracks. The blackmail was uncovered when her caseload was transferred in March 2023, revealing the phone number match. The victim, who later received a suspended sentence for his charges, expressed anger in his impact statement over the betrayal of trust.
Pleaded guilty to blackmail and perverting the course of justice. Abused her position as a police officer to fund her gambling addiction. Suffered from severe gambling disorder and was in considerable debt. Resigned from South Yorkshire Police on October 16, 2025, after receiving a Regulation 13 notice.
Graham Ramsden
Indecent sexual assault *

Graham Ramsden, of Kirk Close in Dewsbury, carried out horrific sexual assault offences against a very young child between 1970 and 1977. The crimes were reported to Kirklees child safeguarding detectives in 2020.
Found guilty of eight counts of indecent sexual assault and two counts of indecency with a child. Two years on licence.

Making a bomb hoax call *

Markel Ible, 32, of St Martins Gardens, Leeds, made a hoax bomb threat call to the Sinai Synagogue in Roundhay, Leeds, on October 6, 2025, claiming he had left a bomb set to explode the following day. The call was made from an unknown number, four days after the fatal terror attack at Heaton Park Synagogue in Manchester on October 2, 2025, during Yom Kippur, which killed Melvin Cravitz and Adrian Daulby.
Pleaded guilty to making a bomb hoax call. The call was made four days after the Manchester terror attack, intended to sow panic and fear. Prior awareness of consequences noted by CPS.
Gary Lewin
Sexual activity with a child *

Gary Lewin, 42, of Brown Royd Avenue, Rawthorpe, manipulated and sexually abused a teenage girl starting in 2024 after his release from prison. He bought her gifts including a PlayStation 5, iPhone Pro Max, and jewellery, supplied her with alcohol and cannabis, sent romantic messages, and engaged in sexual activity with her on multiple occasions, including at her home, in Huddersfield, and at an AirBnB in August 2024. The abuse caused the victim to stop attending school and led to her being reported missing. CCTV installed by her mother captured an incident. Despite bail conditions prohibiting contact, he continued to see her. The victim initially sought to protect him but later confirmed the abuse. Lewin gave 'no comment' interviews, claiming the allegations were revenge.
Pleaded guilty to a series of sex offences including sexual activity with a child and inciting a child to engage in sexual activity. Sentenced by His Honour Judge Khokhar. Subjected to a sexual harm prevention order, indefinite restraining order prohibiting contact with the victim, and ordered to sign the Sex Offenders' Register. Prior release from prison in 2017; made genuine progress until reoffending in 2024.

Alex Tiuga, 18, of Seaforth Place in Leeds, played an instrumental role in rioting in Harehills on July 18, 2024, by using or threatening unlawful violence during the evening disorder.

Delroy Scott, 59, of St Alban Crescent, Leeds, preyed on young girls by offering them lifts, alcohol, drugs and cash to gain influence and control over them before repeatedly sexually assaulting them. The offences involved multiple victims, including two girls targeted jointly with Yusuf Egberongbe and a third victim who reported being sexually assaulted by Scott. The investigation was launched in August 2021 after one victim spoke to a family member. Scott was arrested a month later. The offending would likely have continued without the report.
Found guilty of five counts of engaging in penetrative sexual activity with a girl aged between 13 and 15, attempting to engage in non-penetrative sexual activity with a girl aged between 13 and 15, engaging in sexual activity in the presence of a child, inciting sexual activity with a girl aged between 13 and 15 and sexual assault. Made to sign the Sex Offenders Register for life and given a Sexual Harm Prevention Order.

Found not guilty of another charge of inciting sexual activity with a girl aged between 13 and 15. Made to sign the Sex Offenders Register for life.
Li Liu

Li Liu, 26, and Wanqing Yu, 25, exploited a loophole in the Delay Repay scheme since 2021 by claiming refunds for train tickets pretending they no longer wanted to travel, then applying for compensation on the same late journeys. They created 16 fictitious identities, multiple bank accounts, and used a 20-SIM card adapter to conceal the fraud. Liu illegally acquired £141,031. The scam affected multiple train companies including CrossCountry Trains.
No previous convictions. Started a one-year course at Leeds University. Wants to return to China to reunite with family. Remorse and shame expressed by counsel.

Qabir Hussain

Qabir Hussain, 54, was driving a van and using his mobile phone to check emails moments before he ran over and killed 85-year-old David Brooke as he crossed Barnsley Road in Wakefield in January 2022.
