Michael Lynch, aged 38, of Earp St, Liverpool, arranged for two 14-year-old boys to deliver wraps of heroin and crack to addicts at Barley Lane Nature Reserve near Nadderwater on the edge of Exeter. The conspiracy operated from January 2020 until the arrests on April 15, 2020. Lynch ran three County Lines using street names Scouse Terry, Ginger Jay, and Boris, sourcing drugs from Liverpool. He was caught peddling drugs in Exeter twice during the original Covid lockdown.
Admitted conspiracy to supply class A drugs. Judge Anna Richardson noted the conspiracy was relatively short-lived, operated three drug lines, and involved hundreds of messages. Lynch was the link man with large-scale dealers in Liverpool and had been arrested twice in Exeter during the Covid lockdown with £291 takings and three phones.

James McGlade, aged 26, of Lower Hall St, St Helens, acted as a courier bringing drugs from Liverpool to Exeter and taking cash back. He was involved in the conspiracy with Michael Lynch from January 2020 until the arrests on April 15, 2020, operating three County Lines. The conspiracy involved sourcing class A drugs like heroin and crack for distribution in Exeter and surrounding areas.
Admitted conspiracy to supply class A drugs. Judge Anna Richardson noted McGlade carried out several runs to Liverpool to source drugs and expected a financial advantage. Defence stated he now understands the damage drugs do in society and is unlikely to reoffend upon release.

In February 2020, police executed a warrant at Adrian Miles' address in Honiton, Devon, seizing his mobile phone which contained 1,631 indecent images of children, the majority featuring children aged between six and 12. Children's clothing bought by Miles was also found during the search of his property.
Pleaded guilty to three offences of making indecent images of children. Made subject to Sexual Harm Prevention Order and sex offenders register for 10 years, ordered to attend sex offender programme. Judge warned he avoided immediate prison 'by the skin of his teeth'. Prior convictions for identical offences in 2016 and indecently assaulting an adult in 1995. Defence noted isolated life due to social phobia, chronic fatigue syndrome, bipolar disorder, unemployment, and upset over cat's death in 2019. Only a small number of images in most serious category.

Hospital order under Section 37 of the Mental Health Act
On 21 July 2018, Tristan Morgan, a 52-year-old anti-Semitic radiographer and white supremacist, attempted to burn down Exeter Synagogue, Britain's third oldest, believing he was possessed by the Norse god Loki. He broke a rear window of the 18th century building, poured fuel inside, and set it ablaze with burning paper. The flames backfired, setting his hair and hat on fire, knocking him off his feet, and burning his forehead. Passers-by used extinguishers to control the fire before firefighters arrived and extinguished the smouldering blaze in a room near a gas boiler. Police recovered 24 knives from his home and evidence of his anti-Semitic beliefs, including a song 'White Man' encouraging violence against Jews and a 'White Resistance Manual'. He was suffering from schizotypal personality disorder leading to a psychotic episode. The cost of repairs to the grade II listed building was £23,656.
Admitted one count of collecting information useful to a person preparing a terrorist act, arson (reckless as to whether lives were endangered), and encouraging terrorism. No restriction order made. Ten year terrorism notification order also passed. Judge noted the offending was more attributable to mental disorder than long-held beliefs.

John Saterlay, a retired BT engineer and businessman from Barnstaple, sexually abused two young girls starting when he was 65 years old. The abuse occurred while his wife was dying of cancer, after he had moved to North Devon from Essex following his retirement.
Admitted six sexual assaults and one offence of sexual activity in the presence of a child. Ordered to sign on the sex offenders' register for life and made subject of a Sexual Harm Prevention Order. Recorder Mr Jeremy Wright noted the defendant's remorse and good character but highlighted the loss of innocence to victims. Defendant was diagnosed with prostate cancer and would receive radiotherapy while serving sentence.

Russell Baker, 59, from Ilsington in Devon, conned landlords, tenants and friends out of £157,250 through fraudulent activities at Ashby’s agency. He failed to pass rental income to landlords, mishandled tenants’ deposits not paid into government approved schemes, and pocketed a £22,500 deposit meant for a house purchase. He arranged for monies from one limited company to go into another's bank accounts, making dealings hard to unravel. He 'robbed Peter to pay Paul' but never repaid anyone. Investigated by Devon and Somerset Trading Standards last year following complaints.
Pleaded guilty to nine counts of fraud. Described as full of remorse, accepted he was foolish and reckless, plans to repay by selling home and land.

Breaching Gas Safety Regulations and Health and Safety at Work Act *

Christian Winter, 35, trading as CJS Winter Plumbing & Heating Services of Ashburton in Devon, illegally installed a gas boiler at a privately tenanted property in Kingskerswell, Devon. He then undertook landlord’s gas safety checks despite having no competencies in gaswork or being registered with Gas Safe Register. He deceived the landlord by using a fictitious Gas Safe Register registration number on the records. The illegal gaswork came to light when the boiler, which he had installed and passed as safe over the next three years, was inspected by a properly registered Gas Safe engineer who found faults and classed it as dangerous. The Health and Safety Executive investigation revealed the fraudulent details, and when challenged by the landlord, Winter continued to lie by claiming he was a registered gas engineer.
Pleaded guilty to breaching Regulation 3(3) and 3(7) of the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998 and Section 3(2) of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974.

He enlisted help from others to run the operation.

Mark Williams, 40, of The Deans, Tiverton, attacked his friend during a drinking session at the White Ball Inn in Tiverton on September 26, 2025. He tipped his friend out of his chair, punched him in the face, held him down by the throat, punched him again, then returned to kick him in the head. The victim suffered cuts and bruises. The attack was due to alleged name-calling two years prior.
Admitted assault by beating. Offence put him in breach of a suspended sentence. Previous convictions for strangulation and causing unnecessary suffering to an animal. Phoned police after the attack and expressed remorse. Volunteers in a charity shop.
Lee Sherratt
Causing death by dangerous driving *

Lee Sherratt, 28, of Queen Elizabeth Drive, Paignton, hit elderly holidaymakers Mrs Tegwen Ellis, 75, and her husband Frank, 76, with his BMW convertible on Belgrave Road, Torquay, on 31 August 2006. The couple from Porset Drive, Caerphilly, were crossing the road after a bingo game during their holiday at the Derwent Hotel. Sherratt was driving between 29 and 35mph, failed to see them despite having ample time and distance, and struck them outside the Rainbow Hotel. Mrs Ellis died at Torbay District Hospital; her husband sustained severe injuries.
Pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving. Judge Graham Cottle noted significant credit for guilty plea but described sentencing as difficult and potentially inadequate.

He used his personal phone to illegally share legitimate body-worn video footage and still images captured on his work mobile.
Admitted three counts of misconduct in a public office. Shared images and videos of incidents, including the body of murder victim Paul Wells, with family and friends. Remorseful. Judge James Adkin noted it was a habit, not a one-off, and actions in relation to Mr Wells were abhorrent.

Nicholas Ashby lay in wait in his car near the entrance to a cemetery in Bear Street, Barnstaple, and ambushed two young women walking home alone from the same nightclub exactly a week apart. On Sunday September 25, he wore a mask, strangled the first victim (aged 18) into an arm lock until she passed out, pulled down her tights and slapped her bottom. On Sunday October 2, he followed a young mother into a nearby lane, pulled a knife and started to take off her trousers; she suffered cuts to her hands and body fighting him off. Police tracked him via descriptions, CCTV of his Mercedes car, and DNA match from the second victim's clothing. Arrested on 5 January while driving on the M5.
Married father-of-three, aged 41, of Sowden Park, Barnstaple. Admitted sexual assault and attempted rape. Judge David Evans noted he posed a risk to women and had planned the attacks to target lone women. Praised victims' courage and reaction which led to his identification.

On June 18, 2022, Cosmin-Nicolae Vasioiu, a 47-year-old Romanian national living in a garden shed on Topsham Road, Exeter, followed a lone drunk woman walking home through Exeter city centre after a night out. CCTV captured him lurking for 105 minutes, approaching another woman before targeting the victim near Iron Bridge and raping her in Catacombs cemetery. She screamed for help, was found naked and bruised; he fled, dropping his baseball cap, later shaved his head and had a friend wash his clothes to destroy evidence.
Found guilty by jury after trial; classed as dangerous offender; prior conviction for similar rape in Switzerland; judge noted misogynistic views and high risk of reoffending.
