James Reading, a sergeant in charge of the Air Training Corps at Okehampton, North Devon, sexually assaulted three girl cadets aged 14 and 15. He organised unofficial parties and sleepovers at the ATC hut, plying victims with alcohol, covering windows with bin bags, sending boys away, offering one girl £50 to touch her chest, assaulting one after promising promotion on night exercises, another on the eve of a Remembrance Day parade, and was caught red-handed with a topless 14-year-old.
Found guilty in his absence after denying eight offences. Judge Erik Salomonsen commented on the importance of the ATC upholding high standards for children's moral and physical welfare.

James Ward, aged 57, developed a fixation on a female neighbour in a South Hams village starting in June 2022. He left roses and cards on her doorstep, proposed marriage, invaded her privacy by observing her home, threatened her partner, damaged his car multiple times including putting nails in tyres, shouted abuse, made rude gestures, breached bail conditions and a Stalking Protection Order. The behaviour escalated in December 2023 when he attacked her car with a hammer while disguised in a wig, smashing windows, cutting his hand and smearing blood on the car and her home.
Admitted harassment that caused serious alarm and distress and three breaches of a stalking protection order. Judge James Patrick noted the devastating effect on the victim. Six-year restraining order banning contact with the woman or her partner or visiting the town.

Jack Frankum raped and assaulted a woman by penetration one evening in August 2019. The court heard how on both occasions the victim had pleaded with him to stop. Afterwards, Frankum acted like nothing had happened and tried to make small talk. The victim described feeling worthless and frightened of him.
Found guilty following a trial held in April 2023. Police case officer commended the victim's courage and strength in giving evidence.

Gary Loftus, of Wellesley Road, Torquay, Devon, befriended a family in December 2019, visited an arcade in Exmouth with them, went to their Taunton home in June 2020 and bought sweets for their six-year-old daughter. Three months later, he was arrested after spending nearly an hour walking around the outside of a play area at Paignton seafront on the Esplanade, leering at young children inside and appearing to touch himself for sexual gratification.
Admitted two counts of breaching a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO). Judge Timothy Rose noted he poses a high risk of causing serious harm to children, with a history of child abuse convictions dating back 35 years, including indecent assault in 1989, gross indecency in 1993, and multiple breaches of similar orders.
Gary Parkinson
Conspiracy to supply cocaine *

Gary Parkinson, a former Greater Manchester Police officer, organised a cocaine supply operation between Manchester and Devon starting in 2019. He put up the cash, developed the supply chain using his contacts, arranged drop off points in Devon and arranged for the onward supply of the cocaine, having a substantial influence on others in the chain. He arranged for couriers to bring half-kilo consignments of cocaine to Devon. Parkinson had previously served for 15 years in GMP before moving to the Holsworthy area of Devon. He suffered a serious quad bike accident in 2018 and has health issues.
The judge said the sentence would have been longer, but there had been a substantial delay in the case and Parkinson has serious health issues. Pleaded not specified. References from within the fire service noted.

Gordon Richard East, aged 62 and residing at Pathfields in Torrington, Devon, was convicted of historic child sexual abuse offences dating back to 1962. Following police investigations initiated in 2007 after three victims came forward, he was charged with multiple offences. He pleaded guilty to indecency with a child, indecent assault, and possession and making of indecent images of children. After a trial at Exeter Crown Court, a jury found him guilty of five counts of rape, three counts of buggery, and one additional indecent assault. The abuse spanned several decades, causing severe long-term harm to the victims. The court imposed a sentence of 16 years and six months imprisonment, along with a Sexual Offences Prevention Order and a Disqualification Order.
Pleaded guilty to two counts of indecency with a child, three counts of indecent assault, and possession and making of indecent images. Convicted at trial of five counts of rape, three counts of buggery, and one count of indecent assault. Issued with a Sexual Offences Prevention Order and a Disqualification Order.

On May 31, 2025, Thomas Ward, along with others, attacked Denva Smith in Exmouth. Ward carried a knife and stabbed Smith in the arm, severing the radial artery.
