David Rosewell, of Crook Farm, Combe Raleigh, Honiton, allowed appalling animal health and environmental conditions to persist at his farm. The farm had deep slurry in buildings, decomposing cattle carcasses and bones in fields, cattle in waterlogged conditions with little food, sick and starving animals left to die, live animals grazing amongst carcasses and hazardous debris including domestic waste, scrap metal, broken concrete, and abandoned vehicles. A young calf was found lying in slurry and litter. Despite multiple visits and instructions from authorities in 2022, 2023, and 2024 to provide treatment, feed, remove hazards and carcasses, and comply with an Anti-Pollution Works Notice issued in March 2024, Rosewell failed to act, leading to ongoing pollution risks and animal suffering.
Pleaded guilty. District Judge Smith described the case as 'shocking' and 'reading the script of a horror movie'. Costs of £18,251 awarded to be paid within six months.

On June 9, 2023, at Blundell’s School in Tiverton, Devon, the 16-year-old offender armed himself with claw hammers and attacked two sleeping dormmates aged 15 and 16, smashing their skulls multiple times, causing severe injuries including broken skulls, damaged spleen, lung, and ribs. He then attacked housemaster Henry Roffe-Silvester who investigated the noise, striking him repeatedly before being disarmed. The victims survived due to prompt medical intervention but one suffered life-changing cognitive impairment. Investigation revealed prior planning through internet searches on hammer attacks, serial killers, and school massacres, and evidence he was conscious, listening to music before the assault.
Denied three counts of attempted murder claiming sleepwalking but found guilty by jury after 10-week trial. Sentence minus 495 days already spent in custody.

In the first assault, following an argument, he punched her in the face, kicked her in the back, broke her iPhone when she tried to call for help, and locked her in the flat, forcing her to message her sister via his smart TV before she escaped through a window. In the second assault on July 16, 2024, he dragged her by her hair, punched, kicked, and beat her legs and back with a metal vacuum cleaner hose while high on Xanax, causing multiple bruises (14 on left leg, 11 on right leg, and too many on back and torso), extensive cuts and bruises to her face, and described by the victim as the worst pain she had ever experienced. The assault ended when neighbours called the police. Crook left the flat with her due to police concerns and was arrested in Queen Street, Dawlish, for driving while disqualified. The relationship had become toxic and volatile after his release from a prior incarceration.
Admitted two offences of assault causing actual bodily harm, criminal damage, and driving while disqualified. Judge James Adkins described him as a bad-tempered aggressive bully towards young women. Suffers from ADHD, autism, and Oppositional Defiance Disorder. Was abusing Xanax at the time but has since got clean and is remorseful.

Stephen Parsons, a 71-year-old dog breeder, smothered his 69-year-old wife Erica Parsons to death as she slept at their thatched farmhouse in Cadditon Farm, Bondleigh, near Okehampton, on February 10, 2023. He claimed it was part of a suicide pact because she believed she had cancer and wanted to die, but medical evidence showed she was healthy, did not have cancer, and had suffered three cracked ribs suggesting he knelt on her chest during the killing. Parsons staged his own suicide by superficially cutting his arms and claiming an overdose, but tests showed no fatal wounds or drugs. He was deep in debt, had lied to creditors about both having cancer, and killed her to avoid financial disputes over selling property. He texted a neighbour claiming they were both dead and was found semi-conscious the next day after arranging for friends to take their animals.
Found guilty of murder after a two-week trial. Jury rejected claims of a suicide pact or diminished responsibility due to depression. Judge noted his dishonesty regarding health and debts, and took depression into account as mitigation.

Alfie Smith, 22, of no fixed address, was seen dealing drugs at Flowerpots Fields on the banks of the River Exe in Exeter, within metres of youngsters using the nearby skate park. He was arrested on May 9, 2024, after police recovered designer clothes from his room and found messages on his phone offering items including a £150 Hollister coat as payment for drugs. He was found with almost £500 worth of heroin in 16 wraps and nine £10 bags of crack, along with cash and designer goods. Smith was still on prison licence from a previous 20-month sentence for his part in a major County Lines operation that used children as young as 13 to sell drugs in areas including Exmouth, Dawlish, and Cullompton. After release, he retrained as a building worker but struggled with limited literacy and low benefits (£110 a month after rent), leading him to obtain and sell heroin and cocaine on a small scale to support his cannabis addiction.
Admitted two counts of possession of class A drugs with intent to supply. Still on prison licence from previous sentence for County Lines operation. Judge David Evans commented on the location near skate park and encouragement of shoplifting.

Hazem Badran, along with Kai-Rhys Lawson and Aidan Manvell, participated in a robbery of Euan Baker on March 19, 2021, punching and kicking him and hitting him with a chair to steal his Armani watch and £450 bicycle as punishment over a feud. On April 27, 2021, they entered Mr Baker's home in Exeter and beat him severely with a baseball bat, hammer, and wooden shoe rack, resulting in traumatic brain injury, 25 skull fractures, brain bleeds, and other severe injuries, placing him in a coma. Badran disposed of his clothes after the arrests and attempted to intimidate the witness via calls and social media. A video of a damaged bat was found on his phone, and he bought a new SIM card post-attack.

The assault occurred after she attempted to trigger an emergency button. He pinned her down, punched her repeatedly in the face, broke her phone to prevent her calling police, and caused bruising all over her face and body, plus broken ribs. She escaped, flagged down a car in Asda car park, and was hospitalized for injuries to her face, head, arms, back, abdomen, and ribs. The victim, vulnerable due to mental health issues and drug addiction, believed she was going to die and felt humiliated and worthless in the relationship, which she was trying to end. Jackson had taken her phone to control her.
Admitted causing actual bodily harm. Judge David Evans considered that Jackson has overcome drug addiction and completed a course on attitudes to domestic violence during seven months remanded in custody. Indefinite restraining order imposed banning contact with victim. Warned of over two years imprisonment if order breached.
Thomas Kettleborough

Thomas Kettleborough, a 35-year-old former Inspector at Avon and Somerset Police, sexually communicated with a boy on Snapchat and made more than 150 indecent images of children. He arranged to meet who he believed was a 14-year-old boy via Grindr, leading to his arrest in a police sting on July 14, 2023, in a Bristol car park. During the arrest, authorities found sex toys, condoms, and bondage equipment in his vehicle. The offences spanned four years and occurred while he was in positions of trust, including as a volunteer for the Sea Cadets and the Royal Lifesaving Society.
Pleaded guilty to arranging or facilitating a child sex offence, attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child, attempting to cause or incite a child to engage in sexual activity, engaging in sexual communication with a child, and making indecent photographs of a child. He was dismissed from Avon and Somerset Police for gross misconduct and handed an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order.

On July 27, 2023, she allowed him to visit for the weekend, but after consuming two bottles of vodka, they argued. She asked him to leave and took his belongings to the driveway where he got on his mobility scooter due to his arthritis. He called her a bitch and drove at her, hitting her and forcing her to the ground. He drove over her right arm, breaking it in two places, then moved forward and drove over her right foot and ankle, breaking a bone. He said 'I’m sorry', tried to move her but couldn't, then rode away. She suffered complications, spent 12 days in hospital, and weeks with her arm in plaster. He was arrested on his way home.
Admitted causing grievous bodily harm. Regrets his behaviour and is keen to get help for a serious and long-standing alcohol addiction.

Stuart Grant, 44, of Wheatlands Road, Torquay, supplied cocaine across South Devon, receiving regular supplies from a gang in Cardiff and operating a distribution network. In the first six months of 2021, he received 11 consignments. Police intercepted courier Mohammed Islam on the M5 Southbound near Uffculme, seizing £7,000 worth of cocaine hidden in the rear indicator housing. Surveillance linked the courier to Grant's address. Following Islam's arrest, Grant texted asking his whereabouts. Police searched Grant's home and a friend's house, finding £20,000 worth of cocaine and £17,980 cash, some hidden in fake Lynx deodorant cans and Heinz baked beans tins. He used profits for designer clothes and car trading; his partner had an Audi Q5. Grant turned to dealing after his property maintenance business failed during lockdown and following family tragedies, including his brother Jamie's stabbing in 2018.

Ricky Allison, aged 39, of The Parade, Minehead, was a passenger in a stolen Ford M-Max driven by 18-year-old Conner Palmer during a high-speed police chase in the early hours of October 17, 2019, in Taunton. The car hit a wall in Clifton Terrace, resulting in Palmer's death and serious injuries to Allison and another passenger. Prior to the crash, Allison used bank cards stolen from a house in South Street, Taunton, during a burglary that night, to make two contactless purchases of cigarettes and alcohol at filling stations.
Banned from driving for two years. Cleared of taking part in the burglary. Suspended due to serious head injuries suffered in the crash, leaving him unable to work and living in a YMCA. Judge noted a jail sentence was necessary to mark the death but suspended it considering his changed life.
Weanne Calunod

On January 4, 2024, Weanne Calunod, 25, a student, was driving a Peugeot car along Church Road in Alphington, Exeter, a 20mph zone. She approached cyclist Clive Jones from behind and attempted to overtake him just as he signalled to turn right into Mill Lane. Calunod did not notice the signal, leading to a collision that caused Mr Jones to fall off his bike. He suffered a fractured hip, required a hip replacement, spent four days in hospital, experienced ongoing pain, lost work as a mechanic for many months, and had his confidence cycling shattered, with financial losses. Calunod told police she checked multiple times before overtaking and believed it was safe, but did not see the signal. She remained at the scene until the ambulance arrived.
Pleaded guilty to causing serious injury by careless driving. No previous convictions. District Judge Stuart Smith noted the driving manoeuvre on the approach to a zebra crossing had been unsafe and the cyclist had signalled. The defendant stayed at the scene, assisted the victim, and expressed remorse for her lapse in concentration. Her studies and work with children with special needs have been affected.

In March 2021, Adam Mohammed, aged 24 from Exeter, raped a female student while she was asleep in her bed at her accommodation on Exeter University campus. The victim had been socialising with friends at a party where Mohammed, an unknown attendee, was present. Around 2am, she woke to find him assaulting her, pushed him away, and fled to a friend's room. Police were alerted immediately, and Mohammed was arrested within 24 hours on campus. Forensic evidence linked his DNA to the victim's underwear. He denied the offence but was convicted by unanimous jury verdict after a five-day trial in June 2023.

He also smashed the store window with a bottle of cider before resisting police arrest near Exe Bridge, where he was pepper sprayed and restrained. Marcus Offield, a publican from the Union Inn in Barnstaple, smeared dog faeces on the door handle of the Islamic Centre in Vicarage Road and stuffed a poo bag in the letterbox. Similar incidents occurred over several days in October 2022, including throwing a bag of excrement into the courtyard. These acts were caught on CCTV and were in response to a two-year dispute where someone allegedly kicked his dog. The Islamic Centre, established for 20 years, reported that worshippers felt scared and sought additional safeguards.

Daniel Leitch, along with Tina Westcott, broke into a caravan at 3am on October 5, 2022, where an elderly couple in their 60s were asleep. Leitch kicked in the door and used a piece of wood to batter the male victim. He demanded £1,000, held an angle grinder to the man's neck, causing a cut to his hand, and forced the female victim to remove her top and show her breasts. They stole the woman's phone, bank card, and £200 cash, then ordered the couple to a cashpoint. The male victim was further battered with the wood, leaving him with a gash on his head and injuries to his hands, back, shoulders, arms, and hands, rendering him unable to work. The attack was due to mistaken identity and left both victims traumatised, believing they would die.
Admitted to wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, theft, criminal damage, causing a woman to engage in unwanted sexual activity, assaulting police, and possession of cannabis. Certified as a dangerous offender. He was drunk at the time and now expresses remorse, planning to address his alcohol problem in jail.
