Ricky Allison
Aggravated vehicle taking and fraud *
Sentence
9-month jail term suspended for two years
Ricky Allison, aged 39, of The Parade, Minehead, was a passenger in a stolen Ford M-Max driven by 18-year-old Conner Palmer during a high-speed police chase in the early hours of October 17, 2019, in Taunton. The car hit a wall in Clifton Terrace, resulting in Palmer's death and serious injuries to Allison and another passenger. Prior to the crash, Allison used bank cards stolen from a house in South Street, Taunton, during a burglary that night, to make two contactless purchases of cigarettes and alcohol at filling stations.
Banned from driving for two years. Cleared of taking part in the burglary. Suspended due to serious head injuries suffered in the crash, leaving him unable to work and living in a YMCA. Judge noted a jail sentence was necessary to mark the death but suspended it considering his changed life.
Weanne Calunod
Causing serious injury by careless driving *
Sentence
12-month community order with 100 hours of unpaid work and £199 costs and surcharge
On January 4, 2024, Weanne Calunod, 25, a student, was driving a Peugeot car along Church Road in Alphington, Exeter, a 20mph zone. She approached cyclist Clive Jones from behind and attempted to overtake him just as he signalled to turn right into Mill Lane. Calunod did not notice the signal, leading to a collision that caused Mr Jones to fall off his bike. He suffered a fractured hip, required a hip replacement, spent four days in hospital, experienced ongoing pain, lost work as a mechanic for many months, and had his confidence cycling shattered, with financial losses. Calunod told police she checked multiple times before overtaking and believed it was safe, but did not see the signal. She remained at the scene until the ambulance arrived.
Pleaded guilty to causing serious injury by careless driving. No previous convictions. District Judge Stuart Smith noted the driving manoeuvre on the approach to a zebra crossing had been unsafe and the cyclist had signalled. The defendant stayed at the scene, assisted the victim, and expressed remorse for her lapse in concentration. Her studies and work with children with special needs have been affected.
