On Sunday 13 August 2023, Shaun Brocklehurst, 42, from Folkestone, was stopped by a man in a grocery store on Cheriton High Street while attempting to steal alcohol. An altercation followed in which he punched and kicked the man before leaving. Around half an hour later, he returned with a small fuel can, poured a flammable liquid over the front of the shop, ignited it, leading to a rush of flames. The fire was extinguished quickly by a member of the public and no injuries were reported.
Pleaded guilty to attempted robbery and arson with recklessness as to whether life was endangered.

Shkelzen Vata, 21, was one of three men found at a disused commercial property in School Lane, Ramsgate, which had been converted into a cannabis cultivation site with over 1,000 plants in various stages of growth, 291 lamps, fans, heaters and other equipment, powered by bypassed electricity. The site included makeshift living quarters and plants capable of producing cannabis worth £105,000 to £540,000.

Spencer Bowen, 29, from Liverpool, was driving a silver Audi suspected of drug dealing in Thanet. He failed to stop for Kent Police on the A256 south of Ramsgate on Tuesday 20 October 2020, leading to a pursuit. Officers deployed a stinger near Richborough, puncturing two tyres, but he continued driving at up to 80mph in a 50mph zone, on the wrong side of the A258 and the wrong way around a roundabout. Officers stopped the vehicle safely. Bowen was found in possession of cocaine worth up to £2,600, a knife and £350 cash.
Admitted dangerous driving, driving whilst disqualified, possession of class A drugs with intent to supply and possession of a bladed article.

On Christmas Eve 2021, at his home in the Sturry area of Canterbury, Stephen Buggs was abusive to a woman known to him who knocked on his door after hearing loud banging noises. He produced a small flip knife and syringes, repeatedly jabbing them towards her. Whilst being taken into custody, he spat in the back of the police van and assaulted an officer by biting him on the leg.
Pleaded guilty to offences including assault, making threats with a sharp object, criminal damage and assaulting an emergency worker.

Stephen Dowle raped two girls from 2000. A report was made to Kent Police in 2017 when the first victim, now an adult, suspected he was targeting another child. The investigation found that Dowle had told the second victim not to tell anyone of his actions and that she would have chocolate if she kept quiet.

Stephen Field carried out a series of burglaries in Canterbury between January and May 2022. On 5 January, he used an angle grinder to enter a store in The Parade, causing £15,000 damage and stealing a mobile phone. On 17 March, he stole an electric bike from the University of Kent campus but it was recovered. In April, he broke into a shop in The Parade, a coffee shop in High Street and a supermarket in Sturry Road. On 6 May, he stole a bike from a shop in St George’s Lane. On 16 and 18 May, he targeted mobile phone shops in The Parade and High Street, stealing phones and vaping equipment. He also committed an aggravated burglary on 6 February in Harbledown, stealing metal piping while in possession of a knife. He was arrested later in May 2022 with some stolen goods in his possession; CCTV and other evidence led to charges.
The 32-year-old, of no fixed address, admitted all of the offences including handling stolen goods, seven counts of burglary and an aggravated burglary where he was in possession of a knife.

Stephen Gowton threw a piece of flint through the window of The Hussar pub in Garlinge on the afternoon of 1 January 2023, causing serious injuries to a woman inside. He ran from the scene and got into a car which was driven away. He was identified by an anonymous source, located, and arrested on 14 January 2023. Officers found clothes matching those seen on CCTV.

Stephen Parfitt, formerly of Ringold Avenue, Ramsgate, gained entry to a house in the Newington area in the early hours of Saturday 16 October 2021 where the victim, known to Parfitt, was asleep. Parfitt picked up a craft knife and assaulted the victim, causing serious injuries. The victim was taken to hospital by a friend. Parfitt was identified as the suspect, tracked down and arrested on the afternoon of Sunday 17 October 2021. The weapon was recovered from the scene and clothes matching the description were seized.
Admitted causing grievous bodily harm with intent. Received a 15-year restraining order not to contact the victim.
Stephen Saville

Stephen Saville, 61, formerly of Cliffsend, sexually abused three teenage girls between 2009 and 2017. He convinced one of the girls they were in a consensual relationship and having an affair behind his partner’s back, discouraged her from dating boys her own age, shouted abuse at victims if they texted boys, and plied them with alcohol before abusing them. The first girl reported in 2017, the others in 2018.
Found guilty following a trial. Investigating officer commended victims for coming forward.

Houcine Argoub, 32, from Bromley, assisted Jamal Elkhadir in smuggling 39 migrants out of the UK by parking his van close to the HGV in a layby near Sandwich, Kent, in September 2023, allowing migrants to transfer to the lorry. The lorry was intercepted at Dover docks. Argoub was arrested at his home in November 2023.
Pleaded guilty to assisting unlawful immigration. Driving a van used in the operation.
Howard David Lavers

Howard David Lavers, 55, sexually assaulted a young girl repeatedly between 1994 and 1997 in the Folkestone area. Kent Police also found indecent images of children on his computer. The abuse came to light after the victim bravely reported him in 2016. Lavers was convicted and appeared at Canterbury Crown Court on 28 August for sentencing.
Must serve an extra two years on licence after release. Lack of remorse noted by detective. Victim reported abuse in 2016.
Howard Hammond-Edgar

Howard Hammond-Edgar, 65, carried out horrific abuse against a young girl, with some incidents dating back more than five years. Police uncovered over 2,500 indecent images and videos on 13 devices, many encrypted. He was convicted of two counts of rape and admitted seven additional sexual offences against the same victim, as well as six counts of producing indecent images. The victim displayed courage beyond her years to speak out.

Ian Masterman, 55, from Lewisham, London, repeatedly struck an Ashford woman in the face, strangled her, and pulled out a clump of her hair during a prolonged period of abuse inside an Ashford home on Sunday 14 February 2021. The victim called police shortly after midnight but was assaulted further while on the phone. Officers forced entry, restrained Masterman, and the victim disclosed additional earlier assaults that evening.
Denied actual bodily harm and assault by beating but was found guilty following a trial. Issued with a five-year restraining order.

Ian McQuaide attacked a woman known to him at a flat in Central Parade, Herne Bay on 5 September 2022, causing her serious injuries with a knife in the bathroom. He called emergency services claiming the wound was self-inflicted, then went outside to smoke a cigarette while she lay alone with the injury. Paramedics provided life-saving medical attention before she was taken to a London hospital. Two knives were recovered from the property during searches.
Admitted causing grievous bodily harm with intent and controlling or coercive behaviour. In breach of a suspended sentence order for a previous assault. Also admitted assaulting another woman known to him and causing criminal damage to her property on 20 June 2022. Will serve an extra four years on licence. Subject to an indefinite restraining order protecting the victim. Aged 35.

Haftom Etebarek

Haftom Etebarek met the victim at a nightclub in Ashford and followed her into an alleyway near the town’s High Street in the early hours of Saturday 31 July 2021. She tried to push him away as he approached, but he continued to move towards her, causing her to fall and hit her head. Etebarek raped the victim three times and left the scene. She later reported the incident to Kent Police. Detectives obtained CCTV footage, and Etebarek was arrested on Sunday 7 August 2021. He denied the offences but was found guilty following a trial.
Convicted of three counts of rape following a trial. The 19-year-old was formerly of Pavilion Road, Folkestone.
Giles Lintott

Giles Lintott was found hiding at the back of a Broadstairs home after Kent Police officers carried out a dawn search warrant in July 2021. Lintott was arrested at around 6.30am on Wednesday 21 July, after Kent Police officers forced entry to an address in Hereson Road. He quickly fled through a back door and was found on a shared access path at the end of the property’s garden. A quantity of cocaine was also found inside a bedroom.
Admitted being concerned in the supply of cocaine.
Imara Gillings

Imara Gillings was assisting the cuckooing of an address in Dover in October 2020. He sustained serious stab wounds after a dispute with another county line drug dealer and was found near the address. He discarded a bag in Balfour Road on 6 October 2020 containing crack cocaine and heroin with a combined street value of around £2,000.
Admitted possessing heroin and crack cocaine with intent to supply.
Imre Szatmari
Importation of cocaine *

Imre Szatmari, a Hungarian lorry driver, was caught with 30 packages of cocaine hidden inside a freight lorry at Dover Docks. Border Force officers stopped the vehicle after it refused to stop at the exit. Sixteen kilos of cocaine were found in a fridge in the cab, and 20 more kilos were stashed in holdalls. During interrogation, Szatmari admitted he collected the drugs from a contact near Dunkirk, France, and that they were destined for an address in Hertfordshire. The total haul was valued at £2.4 million.
Pleaded guilty to drug importation.

Ion Cazac removed his van’s fuel tank to pack it with 32 kilos of cocaine. His vehicle was stopped at Dover Eastern Docks on 22 October by Border Force officials who noticed the fuel tank had recently been removed. When opened, 32 packages of cocaine with purity ranging from 61 per cent to 80 per cent were found inside, with an estimated street value of £2.5 million. He initially denied knowledge, claiming he picked up a load and stopped at a hotel on instructions, but later changed his story.
Pleaded guilty to being involved in the importation of a controlled drug at Canterbury Crown Court on 22 November.
Hayley Smith

On the afternoon of 14 May 2020, Hayley Smith and another person wielded a knife against a woman walking down Foord Road in Folkestone, stole her handbag and drove away. They were seen by members of the public who assisted the victim and provided information to Kent Police, leading to their arrests shortly afterwards in Dover. While being led to a police vehicle, Smith claimed she had Covid-19 and breathed heavily in an officer's face. She was found to possess a number of bags of cocaine.
Found guilty of robbery and possessing drugs with intent to supply following a trial; admitted assaulting an emergency worker.

Jack Barron, 17, from Orpington, gathered bricks into a bag which he swung at the 17-year-old victim's head during an assault in Rose Lane, Canterbury city centre, on Thursday 6 June 2019, following a verbal altercation between groups of young people. This sent the victim to the ground, causing serious head injuries and long-term brain damage requiring ongoing treatment. Barron was heard boasting and laughing after the assault.
Found guilty by jury of grievous bodily harm with intent and violent disorder.
Jack Strover

Jack Strover stole a Land Rover from a property in Great Chart around 6.30pm on 3 January 2021 and used it in convoy with a small silver car to steal three bronze statues, known as the 'Dancing Ladies' sculpture by artist Sophie Ryder, from a property in Wittersham the same night. The statues were towed behind the vehicle, causing severe damage, with two found abandoned on the roadside. The stolen vehicle was recovered damaged the next morning. Strover, formerly of Ashford, was arrested less than two weeks later; his phone contained video footage of the statues and screenshots of the police appeal.

The victim was walking along a woodland path near Dunes Road, Greatstone, shortly after 5pm on 13 May when she encountered Usher, who was not known to her. He ran up behind her and repeatedly hit her to the head, knocking her to the ground. He told the woman he was going to rape her and attempted to drag her towards some bushes. The victim managed to push him away and leave the area before contacting police.
Admitted attempted rape at Canterbury Crown Court in July. Will serve an extended six-year licence period after that term and has been placed on the Sex Offender Register indefinitely.
Jack Walker
Stalking and malicious communications *

Jack Walker, 26, of Sandgate Road in Folkestone, started sending unwanted texts, social media messages and making nuisance calls to his ex-partner in December 2021 after refusing to accept the end of their relationship. Despite being blocked, he used public pay phones and borrowed mobiles from members of the public to contact her. By February 2022, unwanted calls increased to almost daily, including from newly-created accounts. On 22 March 2022, he called from a withheld number and threatened to come to her home and stab her father if not allowed entry, leaving the victim terrified. He was arrested by Kent Police.
Pleaded guilty to charges of stalking and malicious communications.
Jack Daniels
Conspiring to supply cocaine and ketamine *

Jack Daniels, using the Encrochat handle ‘simplyned’, conspired to supply large amounts of cocaine and ketamine across Kent between March and June 2020. He coordinated supply and distribution, often using a courier. Phone mast data linked communications to his home in Sandgate. Arrested on 26 November 2020.
Pleaded guilty to conspiring to supply cocaine and ketamine. Aged 32, of Wellington Terrace, Sandgate. Around £4,500 in cash and handwritten notes linked to Encrochat found at his home.

Jack Grindley, 21, from Ashford, broke into a property in Lauren Van Der Post Way, Ashford, on Friday 21 July 2023 at around 11.30pm, with Leon Melson, a 17-year-old boy and Ella Steadman who waited outside. Furniture and other items were damaged and threats were made to the victim, who knew the offenders, fled the scene but returned later to find jewellery, cash and designer clothing missing.

Darren Griffin and Jack Mayers broke into a flat in Earls Avenue, Folkestone, on 18 October 2022 and demanded money from a male occupant. The victim was repeatedly punched to the face and kicked in the stomach, before threats were made to take one of his children. After further assault, the pair stole cash and jewellery and left the scene. Following an investigation by Kent Police, Mayers was arrested two days later.

Graham Kemp was charged with six counts of indecent assault, one count of unlawful sex with a girl under 13 years old, and one count of rape, relating to child sexual assaults and rape dating back to the 1960s. Further victims came forward after his original conviction, prompting a complex investigation by Kent Police.

Graham Pitcairn downloaded images of child sexual abuse from the dark web. Arrested on 3 March 2020 after Kent Police’s Paedophile Online Investigation Team received intelligence that a computer at his former address accessed a website hosting child abuse material. A laptop and USB stick seized contained more than 3,000 indecent images and more than 60 indecent video clips, with more than 400 images and more than 30 video clips graded Category A, the most serious category.
Admitted three counts of making an indecent image of a child. 46-year-old from Dover. 10-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order imposed, preventing internet access, unsupervised access to children and obstructing police.

On 15 May 2019, in an underpass in Kimberley Way, Ashford, approached victim with another man, held him against a wall, threatened to stab him, robbed him of wallet and phone, punched him, and used stolen bank card in stores. On 23 September 2020, took car from Athol Road, Ashford, after owner left engine running; vehicle abandoned damaged in Hever Gardens with Ray's DNA on lighter. On 18 November 2020, took Volvo from forecourt of petrol station in Brookfield Road, Ashford; vehicle found on fire in Bucksford Lane after collision. Disqualified from driving at the time and refused breath/drug tests.
Admitted 12 offences, including robbery, fraud and taking a vehicle without consent. Repeat offender who continued to commit crime while under investigation.

Gezem Shabani, 46, was arrested while hiding in the rafters of a building on Park Farm Industrial Estate in Folkestone which contained more than 2,000 cannabis plants spread over two floors, along with heating, growing equipment and chemicals. The growing area was hidden behind a false front office. Kent Police executed a warrant on Friday 28 July 2023.

George Higgins was arrested at his home in Dover in July 2019 following intelligence about drug production at a property in Maison Dieu Road. A further 300 vials of class C drugs were found at his property. He was involved in an operation producing steroids including testosterone, trenbolone, boldenone, drostanolone and mesthasterone, which had been running since 2017 and generated at least £80,000.

George Mason, 29, from Margate, and two other men forced a window to enter a religious centre in St Augustine’s Road, Ramsgate, in the early hours of Friday 7 July. A victim activated an alarm, causing the burglars to flee; Mason was detained at the scene. Some stolen money was recovered from him; the others escaped with up to £1,000. An internal door was damaged and one victim injured his hand.

His vehicle contained eight revolvers which he claimed to have purchased in Belgium, believing them to be antiques, with intention to gift some to a friend and sell the remainder. He admitted buying the weapons from a business in Holmbeek, Belgium, which had refused to ship them. A subsequent search of his home uncovered an illegal, 3D-printed firearm, though not fully functional.
Pleaded guilty to importing prohibited firearms and possessing a 3D-printed weapon.

Erik Mata, 19, formerly of Wood Street, Dover, and Roland Berko targeted a vulnerable man in his 30s on 4 January 2019 along Folkestone Road in Dover, following him into an alleyway, pretending to be police, and stealing money, bank card, bus pass and mobile phone. On 7 January 2019, they targeted a teenage boy at a bus stop in London Road, Dover, luring him to Templar Street, pulling a knife, and stealing cash and phone.

Dobkin was arrested in London on 3 March, charged, denied the allegations, and was found guilty on 1 September of two counts of rape, sexual activity with a child, and attempting to cause a child to engage in sexual activity.

Gareth Hall sent messages to someone he thought was a 12-year-old girl through a chat website in January 2023, attempting to obtain indecent images. The person was an undercover police officer. This occurred despite a 10-year SHPO imposed in 2021 after he was found with indecent images on his mobile phones. The order forbade accessing the internet without informing authorities, using unmonitored devices, and other online activities. Hall was arrested in February 2023. Analysis of his computer showed attempts to find teen chatrooms and use of an undisclosed phone.
Admitted charges of attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child, attempting to incite a girl to engage in sexual activity, making indecent photographs and breach of a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO). Previously subject to a 10-year SHPO imposed in 2021.

Francis Farnan, from Dover, took advantage of an elderly and disabled woman close to him by putting himself in charge of her finances, writing cheques and withdrawing cash from her bank accounts totalling £92,388 between April 2016 and October 2018. One cheque was for just over £46,000 and bank documents were found at his home. He also opened a Post Office account in her name and withdrew cash systematically.
Admitted theft.
