On 10 January 2002, at around 1am in the St Werburghs area of Bristol, Inderjit Singh Bains picked up the victim, a woman in the street sex trade, in his white panel van after circling the area and stopping outside a pub. After agreeing a fee, he drove towards Eastgate as requested but continued up the M32 to a secluded area off Stoke Lane in Frenchay. When the victim asked for payment, Bains punched her repeatedly to the face and body, causing her to lose and swallow a tooth, then raped her without using a condom. He subsequently told her to get dressed and drove her back into the city. The victim memorised his number plate and reported the incident to the One25 Project soon after, which retained a detailed description. She reported to police in January 2022, leading to his identification and arrest. The trial was in March 2024.
Found guilty by unanimous jury verdict of rape and actual bodily harm. Sentencing in absence. Judge James Patrick noted the offence involved a degree of abduction and was prolonged and persistent, with long-standing emotional effect on the victim.

Mobile footage from one of the phones proved the collision was intentional. There was an earlier deliberate collision that day with the same vehicle injuring two other teenagers, in which Dodds was involved. The Mini was used as a weapon in cold blood.

The obsession had escalated from arguments to physical abuse. When two other people tried to intervene, Downer stabbed one five times and the other once. All victims escaped to a neighbour's house for aid. Police arrived to find Downer outside smoking a cigarette. He initially provided a false story to police but pleaded guilty when faced with evidence.
Pleaded guilty to attempted murder and two counts of grievous bodily harm. Restraining orders granted to protect the three victims.
Joshua Milkins

He was arrested as part of police investigations before admitting each offence.

He caused the initial landing to be aborted and was verbally abusive towards cabin crew. He failed to obey lawful commands of the pilot and behaved in a threatening, abusive, insulting, or disorderly manner towards a member of the aircraft crew, using threatening or abusive words or behaviour likely to cause harassment, alarm, or distress.

Christopher Barbosa
Conspiracy to supply class A drugs *

Christopher Barbosa, 32, formerly of Sea Mills in Bristol, was identified as ‘Kilo-chris’, a key associate in a major drugs conspiracy. Evidence from his encrypted phone showed he purchased at least 46 kilograms of cocaine from Bath-based Romaine Hyman at a cost of over £1.5 million in just two months. He also bought at least 20kg of cocaine from the Wiltshire-based Allison brothers and 3kg from North Somerset man Alex Male. Barbosa used Robert Dent’s home in Knowle West as a safe house, with James Hele as a courier. He was arrested in May 2020, went on the run travelling across mainland Europe, was arrested in Paris while trying to continue his journey from Dubai to Barcelona, spent a year in custody in France contesting extradition, and was returned to the UK last December.
Pleaded guilty on 25 January 2024 to three counts of conspiracy to supply class A (cocaine, heroin and crack cocaine); conspiracy to conceal, disguise, transfer or remove criminal property; and acquiring criminal property.

Paul O’Shea assisted the conspiracy from outside the prison by providing Langdown with prohibited items such as drugs, mobile phones, and SIM cards to smuggle into HMP Guys Marsh, and by collecting payments from associates of inmates. On nine occasions between January and August 2023, he met Langdown in Dorset and Wiltshire to hand over items or money. Financial enquiries showed over £60,000 paid into his bank account from inmate associates. A search of his home on 26 September 2023 found a protein powder tub containing thousands of Pregabalin capsules, 22 smartphones, 20 SIM cards, 20 charging cables, and a 4G router, valued at £90,000 to £190,000 in prison.

Kingsley Balkwill committed multiple serious sex offences against four young women between 2018 and 2023, including manipulating and emotionally and physically threatening them. One specific incident occurred on 14 April 2018. He was found guilty following two trials held last year.

The victim suffered a collapsed lung and multiple other injuries, received treatment in hospital, and has since been released home. First aid was given by attending officers, and the three men were arrested less than an hour later and charged.

Israel Baber, 37, set a sofa on fire in the stairwell of Eccleston House, a block of flats in Barton Hill, Bristol, just after 6am on 20 October 2022. CCTV and doorbell camera footage showed him moving around the building at the time. He falsely claimed to be in his flat, but a reconstruction proved otherwise. The prosecution demonstrated the offender matched his height, build, and clothing. The fire spread quickly, evacuating all residents, with one rescued by fire services. Six people were treated for smoke inhalation, but no serious injuries occurred. Residents were re-housed by Bristol City Council, with damage estimated at over £600,000.
Found guilty of arson. Sentence increased due to aggravating factors. Will serve a minimum of two-thirds in custody. Refused to take accountability.

On March 15, 2023, Zak O’Neill, then 19, stabbed his mother Michelle O’Neill 92 times at their family home in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, during a psychotic episode believing it would save their souls. He had contacted police and a mental health crisis team the previous day expressing concerns about his mental state and feeling dangerous. After the attack, he drove to a pub in Birdlip, leaving his grandmother to discover the body. He called police at 10.22am admitting to the killing and attempting suicide.
Admitted manslaughter by reason of diminished responsibility. Diagnosed with schizophrenia and psychotic at the time. No previous convictions. Judge noted he was extremely ill, expressed remorse, and is a dangerous offender if untreated.
Matthew Mckenzie
Sexual activity with a girl under 13 *

In June 2023, Matthew McKenzie, aged 47 from Totterdown in Bristol, stayed overnight at an address in Bristol where he sexually touched an eight-year-old girl and carried out sexual acts with her for his own gratification. The child immediately informed her mother, leading to police involvement and McKenzie's arrest within hours.

Alieu George, 46, of no fixed address, approached the victim while she was out with colleagues after work, drawing her away from the group with made-up excuses and isolating her. He made repeated attempts to sexually assault her as he led her towards Dorset Gardens, a park about a five-minute walk from Brighton Beach. On June 22, 2023, just after 9am, witnesses spotted the woman's distress and called police. George was found on top of the woman on the ground. He lied to police, claiming she was his girlfriend. He was arrested and charged with rape on the day of the offence.
Found guilty of rape and sexual assault by penetration at trial in December. Three years on extended licence. Indefinite restraining order imposed.

Simon Steeves, 71, stabbed his wife Denise Steeves, 59, to death at their home in Diamond Meadow Lodge Park, Weston Road, Brean, on October 25, 2023. He then called 999 and informed police he had murdered her. Officers performed CPR until paramedics arrived, but Denise died at the scene. Steeves was arrested at the scene and charged the following day.

Kristen Persen, 22, from Fairwater in Cardiff, was arrested at an address in Cardiff on 30 November 2022 following a joint investigation between the West Midlands Counter Terrorism Unit and Counter Terrorism Policing Wales. On his laptop, detectives found instructional books and manuals for the manufacture of firearms, explosives and detonators as well as white supremacist propaganda. Material was also found glorifying proscribed extreme right-wing banned organisations relating to Nazism, racism, anti-Semitism ideology. Also found at his address was a large amount of clothing, flags and stickers illustrating and supporting right wing views.
Pleaded guilty to 10 charges; ordered to serve a minimum of two thirds of the sentence.

Harry Hollowell purchased farm machinery stolen from farm burglaries in the Sedgemoor area of West Somerset throughout 2020. On October 16, 2020, police searched a farm in South Barrow near Sparkford and seized 20 stolen machines, with more recovered later. He also, with another defendant, bought and sold stolen plant equipment from building sites in Cardiff in 2020. Over 20 stolen items of valuable farm machinery were recovered by police.
Pleaded guilty to conspiracy to handle stolen goods. Ordered to pay £53,958.32 to seven victims; remainder invested in criminal justice system.

James Furness, 50, and his partner Sonja Pullan, 55, fraudulently claimed nearly £54,000 in benefits while running a lettings agency called Hove Properties. Furness told the council he only had one bank account but had three business accounts registered at 41 Goldstone Way, Hove, Pullan's address. He neglected to declare Pullan, who was also receiving benefits. Between them, they claimed £22,000 in Housing and Council Tax benefits, with the rest for Income Support and Jobseekers Allowance. The investigation uncovered at least 18 properties managed by Hove Properties and 66 documents linking Furness to the agency, plus documents linking Pullan. Furness claimed he was paying rent when he wasn’t and Pullan produced false rent receipts. He also produced a false tenancy agreement for a flat in St Aubyns, Hove, where a third party was living. Pullan received undeclared income from foreign students and Hove Properties.

Robert Austin, the director of a Brighton timber company, Mackintosh and Partners, defrauded the business of £2.6 million between 2002 and 2008 by falsifying accounting records. The company, which had traded profitably for 70 years and had locations in Brighton and Potters Bar, Hertfordshire, went into administration in 2008 and later liquidation as a direct result of the losses. This led to job losses for employees and directors. The fraud was reported to police in 2011 following an internal investigation. Austin, whose father owned the company, positioned himself in financial control driven by greed, affecting many lives.

Collin Reeves, a 35-year-old former Royal Engineer and Afghanistan veteran, stabbed his neighbours Stephen Chapple (36) and Jennifer Chapple (33) to death with a ceremonial dagger at their home in Dragon Rise, Norton Fitzwarren, near Taunton in Somerset, on the evening of November 21, 2022. The murders followed a long-running dispute over parking spaces on the new-build housing development since May 2022. Less than an hour before the attack, Reeves' wife had asked for a trial separation. He climbed the fence separating their gardens, entered through the back door, and stabbed each victim six times while their two young children slept upstairs. Reeves called the police shortly after to confess but denied murder in court.
Unanimously convicted of murder. Claimed manslaughter due to diminished responsibility but diagnosed with only mild to moderate depression. Judge noted the killings tore the heart out of two families and left the victims' children orphans.

They struck him several times around the head with bottles, causing wounds that required hospital treatment and resulted in permanent scarring. They then moved to the bottom of St James’s Street where they hurled homophobic abuse at a 34-year-old gay man, punched him, chased him across Old Steine to the bus stops near Pavilion Gardens, and continued the assault, requiring stitches for his wounds. During the assault, Wilson snatched the victim's phone as he tried to call police. The attacks were unprovoked, racially and homophobically motivated.
Found guilty after an 11-day trial. Judge Anthony Niblett described the attacks as unprovoked and vicious, motivated by the victim's eastern European accent and the second victim's sexuality. Also convicted of stealing a mobile phone.
