Martin Reilly
Armed robbery *
Sentence
life imprisonment with a minimum of 12 years
Martin Reilly, 53, carried out a series of armed robberies at betting shops across Britain between June 13 and October 10, 2023, after falling out with his probation officer. He used disguises including wigs, hats, false beards, moustaches, a fright mask, and once impersonated Elvis Presley with aviator sunglasses, stick-on sideburns, and a black wig to hide scarring on his cheeks. He targeted shops in Brighton, Hove, Eastbourne, Woking (Surrey), Portsmouth (Hampshire), Westcliff-on-Sea (Essex), Bedford (Bedfordshire), and west London, entering after opening, demanding cash from tills and safes while brandishing an imitation firearm or knife, locking victims in toilets, kitchens, or store cupboards, and escaping with a total of £23,000. The crimes spanned seven police force areas, leading to a nationwide manhunt. Victims suffered ongoing anxiety, sleep difficulties, and impacts on daily working lives, with no physical injuries but significant mental anguish. Reilly was arrested in Hereford on October 2023, where police found disguises, a large knife, and an imitation handgun in his flat at Charades Guesthouse.
Guilty pleas to seven armed robberies, one attempted armed robbery and seven counts of possession of a firearm. Previously released on licence from a life sentence in 2005 for similar offences. Judge noted the pleas spared victims from reliving trauma.
