Dermot Quilligan
Fraud *
Sentence
one year in prison
In October 2019, Dermot Quilligan and his accomplice attended a property in Stevenage, fraudulently pressuring the customer into agreeing to unnecessary roofing work valued at £5,400 instead of the original £60 quote for fixing leaking guttering. He caused criminal damage to the roof, behaved in a coercive and aggressive manner, and demanded immediate payment of £2,000 for scaffolding, leading to his arrest after a bank raised concerns.
The judge described the crime as 'really despicable conduct involving preying on a vulnerable lady who had suffered storm damage'. He had a previous conviction for a dishonesty offence in Australia in 2019.
February 2020 1 case
Hannah Harris
Sexual activity with a child *
Sentence
6 years imprisonment
Hannah Harris, a 23-year-old teaching assistant at a school in Hertfordshire, groomed a 14-year-old male pupil starting when she was 21. She exchanged social media messages with the boy, met him outside school, drove him to supermarkets to buy sweets, took him to McDonald's, and allowed him to smoke cannabis in her car. She had been warned at least twice about inappropriate conversations and flirtatious behaviour, including play fighting with a pupil. Harris tricked the boy's parents by pretending to be the mother of his fictional girlfriend. The sexual activity occurred in a supermarket car park in December 2019 and January 2020. She was caught after the boy's older brother discovered the relationship in January 2020, alerting the parents.
Convicted of one count of sexual activity with a child. Placed on the sex offenders register indefinitely. Judge found her behaviour was an abuse of trust and constituted grooming. She disregarded warnings about inappropriate behaviour. Defence argued she did not intend to cause harm and regrets her actions.
November 2018 1 case
Adam Hill
Theft by employee *
Sentence
14 months imprisonment suspended for 18 months
Adam Hill, a 35-year-old former Warner Bros Studio worker, stole more than 1,000 items of Harry Potter merchandise – including wands, ties, badges and key rings – worth £36,945 from the studio’s stockroom in Leavesden, Hertfordshire, over a four-month period. He advertised the goods on a personal eBay account and posted them to buyers from a local post office, even using the company’s franking machine. The thefts were discovered in March 2018 after colleagues noticed stock appearing and disappearing from under his desk. An internal investigation revealed he had sold 1,040 items, and police searches of his car and home in St Neots, Cambridgeshire, found additional stolen items ready to be posted.
Pleaded guilty to theft by employee. Ordered to do 250 hours unpaid work.

He also secretly filmed a young woman in the shower on multiple occasions between June 17, 2015, and November 22, 2016. This was discovered during a polygraph test related to a previous conviction.
Pleaded guilty to the charges. Had a prior community order for making indecent images of a child. Jailed for 6 months, with a sexual harm prevention order, supervision upon release, and addition to the sex offenders register for seven years.
January 2016 1 case
Thames Water Utilities Limited
Environmental pollution *
Sentence
£1,000,000 fine
Waste from the Tring sewage treatment works repeatedly leaked into the Wendover Arm of the Grand Union Canal in Hertfordshire between July 2012 and April 2013 due to poorly performing inlet screens causing equipment blockages, leading to sewage debris and sludge discharge. Routine samples on January 31, 2013, showed high levels of iron, aluminium, and chemical oxygen demand. Public complaints and visits by Environment Agency officers confirmed pollution, including sanitary products and ear buds near the outfall.
Pleaded guilty to two charges under the Environmental Permitting (England and Wales) Regulations 2010. Ordered to pay costs of £18,113.08 and a victim surcharge of £120. Judge Andrew Bright QC emphasized the need for large organizations to implement reforms, with severe sentences for environmental offences.
May 2011 1 case
Paul Bint
Fraud by false representation *
Sentence
3 years imprisonment and disqualified from driving for 12 months
Paul Bint, a habitual fraudster, impersonated high-profile figures such as the Director of Public Prosecutions Keir Starmer and barrister Jonathan Rees to deceive women he met through newspaper dating columns and the internet. Over a six-week period, he stole cash, jewellery, and other items from at least five victims, including businesswoman Penelope Edwards and Vivienne Walsh, by gaining their trust and access to their homes. He also committed burglary by stealing a barrister's laptop from the robing room and drove while disqualified. His actions involved false claims of owning luxury cars, properties, and socialising with celebrities, leading to significant emotional and financial harm to his victims.
Pleaded not guilty but was convicted. Judge Deborah Taylor noted his appalling record, describing him as a plausible liar and a menace, and stated that an immediate custodial sentence was appropriate due to the nature of the offences.
January 1985 1 case
Malcolm Fairley
Rape *
Sentence
six life sentences
Malcolm Fairley, from Sunderland and Peterlee, County Durham, committed a series of burglaries, rapes, and serious sexual assaults across Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire, and Hertfordshire throughout 1984. He broke into victims' homes, built dens, carried out offences while masked and armed with a shotgun, then escaped to the countryside. He was the subject of a major manhunt and caught due to his northern accent and distinctive harvest yellow Austin Allegro car.
Actions described by the judge as 'wickedness beyond condemnatory description'. Died of heart attack on May 28, 2024, while serving sentence at HMP Hull.
