Sentence
12 months in a young offenders institute
On a bus in Blackpool, Ollie Chalmers-Millington, believing a 12-year-old girl had played knock-a-door-run at his house the previous night, made derogatory comments calling her 'slag' and 'slapper'. When confronted by the girl's mother, he 'donkey kicked' her in the back. As her partner intervened, Chalmers-Millington produced a hatchet-style axe from his jacket, holding it in the air. The partner took the axe and gave it to the bus driver. A scuffle ensued, resulting in bruises and black eyes to the mother's face and punches to the partner. The girl fled the bus in terror, thinking her mother had been killed, and returned with help. The family suffered ongoing trauma, including nightmares, anxiety, and avoidance of buses.
Pleaded guilty to possession of a bladed article in public, ABH and common assault. Judge Michael Maher commented on the defendant's lack of insight into the seriousness of the offences and his unacceptable behaviour towards a 12-year-old child.
