Causing death by dangerous driving *
Sentence
6 years and 9 months detention in a young offenders' institute
On February 29, 2024, at around 6.15pm, Harley Whiteman, 19, under the influence of alcohol and cocaine, drove a Ford Fiesta at speed (estimated 40-60mph) on Brecon Road, Hirwaun, swerving to avoid an oncoming car in a narrow gap caused by parked vehicles. The car mounted the kerb and struck 13-year-old Kaylan Hippsley, who was standing outside a Co-op store with friends, throwing him 12.5m. Whiteman did not stop, drove off erratically, but returned to the scene where he drunkenly obstructed a student nurse performing CPR on Kaylan, shouting abusively and showing no remorse. He was aggressive towards bystanders and police, refused breath and blood tests, and later admitted to consuming four pints of lager and a line of cocaine. Kaylan suffered unsurvivable injuries and died in hospital on March 3, 2024.
Pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving and failing to provide a specimen. Of previous good character. Disqualified from driving for 8 years and 4 months.
