On October 19, 2022, in Merthyr Tydfil, Luke Summers, 29, from Gurnos, launched an unprovoked attack on a woman in her late seventies. CCTV footage captured the victim putting out her bins outside her house while Summers watched from behind a wall. After she returned inside, he knocked on the door, forced his way in, punched her with such force that she fell to the floor, and demanded money. He fled with stolen money, jewellery, and a mobile phone, attempting to wipe the data and claim it as his own. An investigation led to his arrest less than two hours later, followed by charges and remand.
The judge sentenced him following the trial. Detective Constable Mike Snare noted that Summers deliberately targeted a vulnerable woman in her late seventies for greed, leaving her injured and distressed.

Analysis of three seized mobile phones showed he was messaging 413 contacts offering crack cocaine and high-purity cocaine, instructing others on producing crack cocaine, and demanding bank cards and PIN numbers from customers to secure payment.

Jakir Hussain, 39, from Grangetown, picked up his victim in Cardiff city centre and asked to use her bathroom when they arrived at her address. After first locking her in his taxi and then following her into the house, he made his way into her bedroom where he raped her during the early hours of November 19, 2022. He was arrested two weeks later when traced through CCTV. He initially denied any sexual activity but changed his story after his DNA was found at the scene, claiming it was consensual. The victim has not been able to sleep in her bedroom since the incident and has been suffering from flashbacks.
Found guilty of rape following a trial. Made subject of a Sexual Harm Prevention Order, sex offender notification requirements for life, a restraining order, and barred from working as a taxi driver indefinitely.

Jake Brooks, originally from New Tredegar and now living in Tylorstown, used the internet to contact a person he believed was a teenage girl aged 13-15. The profile was operated by Red Rose UK as a decoy. He was already bound by a sexual harm prevention order imposed at Cardiff Crown Court in August 2022 after a previous conviction for attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child and possessing indecent images. At Merthyr Tydfil Crown Court he admitted attempting to cause or incite a girl aged 13 to 15 to engage in sexual activity, attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child, and breaching his sexual harm prevention order.
Admitted three charges. Already subject to a five-year sexual harm prevention order from a previous conviction. Must sign the sex offenders' register for life and subject to a sexual harm prevention order with no end date.
Daniel Morgan

Daniel Morgan, 35, had been drinking at The New Inn in Cefn Rhigos, Rhondda Cynon Taf, before flying into a rage after being taunted over his marriage breakdown. He texted the landlord threatening to ram the pub with a bulldozer, stole the vehicle from his father’s farm, and drove it into the building causing over £22,000 damage. He then drove over another vehicle before being stopped. The incident occurred in December last year after Morgan had been drinking and taking cocaine.
Pleaded guilty to aggravated vehicle taking, dangerous driving and criminal damage recklessly endangering life. Disqualified from driving for three years and three months. Judge Celia Hughes noted no one was seriously injured but highlighted the fear caused and long-term effects.
Daniel Howells-Thomas

Daniel Howells-Thomas carried out an unprovoked attack on Keyron Curtis, 24, outside the Colliers Arms in Penywaun, Aberdare, in the early hours of October 17, 2021. He punched Curtis, causing a catastrophic brain bleed, and Curtis died four months later in hospital. His family donated his organs.

Thomas Doyle

Thomas Doyle, 23, of Sunny View, Pontlottyn, was pursued by police through the south Wales valleys in a Vauxhall Astra. After the vehicle was stopped in Pontlottyn, Doyle fled into a wooded area carrying a blue carrier bag but was detained. Officers recovered 249g of cocaine, 20g of crack cocaine, and 238g of heroin (street value £50,620-£50,780), along with cash, phones, cannabis, a Canada Goose jacket, a machete, 19 nunchucks, and a metal baseball bat. Phone messages showed drug supply activity. He had developed a gambling problem leading to £15,000 debt after losing his job.
Pleaded guilty to three counts of possessing Class A drugs with intent to supply, possession of a Class B drug, two counts of possessing offensive weapons, and possessing a bladed article. Had two previous convictions for driving offences. Judge noted he took a risk with his freedom by selling drugs.

Tracy Johnson, 52, dishonestly claimed £10,557.96 in housing benefit and £1,686.20 from the council over a two-year period – over £12,000 in all. She said she was living at Flat 3, 30 Adelaide Crescent in Hove and was a house-bound agoraphobic who was chronically afraid of other people. In fact, Ms Johnson was travelling the world, enjoying trips to Argentina, India, New York and Madrid. The fraud came to light when Brighton & Hove’s officers received a housing benefit claim from a third party claiming to rent Ms Johnson’s flat from her as she had gone travelling. Ms Johnson subsequently moved to Wales but continued to live abroad while claiming benefits in the UK. The combined overpayments to her were more than £50,000, with offences continuing up until 2012.
Found guilty of fraud in a joint prosecution by Brighton & Hove City Council and the Department for Work and Pensions.
