2 years and 4 months imprisonment
Patryk Hrymak, a 27-year-old phlebotomist at Croydon University Hospital, blackmailed eight men he met on the dating app Grindr by threatening to distribute naked photos to their friends and family unless they paid him money. He used the alias Thomas and contacted victims via social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram. Hrymak demanded small amounts (£30-£50) after victims refused initial requests, and in two cases, he followed through by distributing the images. The blackmail occurred in November 2018, motivated by £7,500 debt from a cannabis habit. Victims included a banking auditor, university admissions officer, two student nurses, and an IT boss at a private bank. One victim described the ordeal as 'cyber raped' and now suffers panic attacks; another paid £110 out of fear.
Pleaded guilty to eight charges of blackmail and two of disclosing private sexual photographs with intent to cause distress. Judge Deborah Charles noted the significant impact on victims and described blackmail as a nasty offence.
