PC Rob Melton noted that Debenham committed crimes to fund his lifestyle and that the arrest resulted from combined police efforts.

Judge Nicholas Ainley noted the defendant's interest in dating Asian women changed into a need for sexual relationships with children, involving two different children.

Ahmad lied to police, claiming to be a neighbour's sister, but was linked by DNA on a bloodstained jacket and rucksack. The relationship involved Ahmad's abusive, controlling behaviour, including physical attacks, threats to stab him, suicide threats to prevent breakup, and isolating him from friends. She was on licence for prior robbery and possession of a bladed article.
