Rafal Czajka, a 39-year-old Polish national and lorry driver, attempted to smuggle 45 kilos of cocaine, worth an estimated £2.1 million at street level, into the UK. The drugs were hidden in six metal box sections built into the bulkhead of his trailer, covered by a wooden board secured with rivets. The lorry was stopped and searched by Border Force officers at the port of Dover on November 16, 2021. It also carried a legitimate load of ventilation blower parts from the Netherlands destined for Basingstoke, Hampshire. A rivet gun and pop rivets were found in the cab.
Pleaded guilty to the importation of controlled drugs.

In June 2022, Jozef Balog, a 33-year-old Slovakian national, attempted to bring a Vietnamese woman into the UK by concealing her in a tiny, custom-built hideaway behind the dashboard of his modified Vauxhall Vectra. The vehicle was intercepted by Border Force officers at the UK Control Zone in Coquelles, Northern France. Officers noticed the passenger side carpet was out of place and dismantled the glove box, discovering the woman in cramped conditions. Balog claimed he was returning to his home in Manchester after visiting relatives.
Pleaded guilty to assisting unlawful immigration in June 2022. Remanded in custody for 40 months since then, so sentence already served.

The lorry, carrying a legitimate cargo of frozen potatoes from Tilburg, Netherlands, for delivery in the north west of England, was stopped at the UK Inbound border in Coquelles, France, on October 16, 2023.

Daniel Whereatt, 48, of Seymour Road, Bristol, was stopped at Dover’s Eastern Docks on March 18, 2019, as he returned to the UK from Amsterdam. He claimed to have been on a day trip to Dunkirk, but phone analysis confirmed he was in Amsterdam picking up heroin. Border Force officers searched his car after noticing a strong smell of fuel and found 18 tape-wrapped packages submerged in the fuel sender tanks, containing 6kg of heroin worth £800,000 and 2kg of cutting agents (paracetamol and caffeine). His DNA was on a screwdriver and metal file near the concealment area. The vehicle was insured for only two days, believed to be solely for the drug importation.
Pleaded guilty to importing 6kg of heroin. DNA found on tools used to conceal the drugs.

Ross Patrick Deffley, 26, of Solihull, West Midlands, attempted to smuggle 183kg of heroin and cocaine, valued at £16.5 million, hidden inside canisters of nitrous oxide within catering supplies. He was stopped at the Dover border on September 21 while driving a van. Border Force officers found the drugs concealed in the boxes, along with an extendable baton in the cab. His fingerprints and DNA were on packages containing 97kg of heroin and 86kg of cocaine. Deffley claimed the packages were for the catering industry but they were destined for a residential address he could access. He had set up companies to transport the nitrous oxide canisters used for smuggling.
Convicted of two counts of attempting to import class A drugs on November 30. Earlier convicted of possession of an offensive weapon. Subject to confiscation investigation under the Proceeds of Crime Act.

The vessel was intercepted by the Border Force on July 10, 2022. Mohamed allegedly received 600 euros for the role due to his previous experience, though he claimed he did it for free in exchange for passage.

On April 27, 2021, Callum Wheeler, 22, ambushed PCSO Julia James, 53, in Ackholt Wood near her home in Snowdown, Kent, while she was walking her Jack Russell dog Toby. Wheeler had been roaming the countryside with a railway jack, a large metal bar used to lift train tracks. He lay in wait in bushes for a lone female victim, motivated by sexual intent. When Mrs James spotted him, her Apple Watch data showed her heart rate spiking as she attempted to run away and change her route. Wheeler inflicted multiple blows to her head, causing catastrophic injuries described by a pathologist as the worst he had ever seen. DNA on the breast area of her white top indicated sexual touching. Wheeler had no connection to the victim but targeted her when she became vulnerable, away from other dog walkers. He was a prolific user of internet pornography, having searched for terms like 'raped' two days prior. Upon arrest, he admitted to uncontrollable actions and stated he would return to the woods to rape and kill if released, claiming Mrs James deserved to die.
Found guilty of murder in May. Sentenced by Mr Justice Wall. The judge described the attack as brutal, vicious, planned in advance, and sexually motivated. Wheeler showed no emotion during sentencing and was escorted from Broadmoor high security psychiatric hospital.

Robert Keogh, 37, from Clonee, Dublin, was stopped by Border Force officers at the Port of Dover at 5am on Friday 2 August 2019 en route from Calais. He had left the UK through Dover on 24 July 2019 and claimed he was returning from driving around Europe. A search of his Volkswagen Passat recovered 60 firearms, including a Turkish manufactured Zoraki blank firing handgun converted to fire live ammunition concealed in the rear-left quarter panel, and 59 others wrapped in plastic and hidden in the bumper and rear quarter panels. None had serial numbers. This was believed to be the largest seizure of lethal weapons at a UK port. Latex gloves, three sim cards, and four mobile phones were also found. In interview, Keogh stated he had a 3,000 Euros gambling debt and claimed the vehicle was out of his control for three days while abroad, suspecting money might have been hidden in it. The firearms belonged to an organised crime group.

Timothy Davies, 45, raped a woman in a train toilet after she became unwell around 1am in December 2018 while travelling to Ramsgate, east Kent. CCTV showed him touching her inappropriately before leading her to the toilet where she was sick. He locked the door and raped her during the attack. His wife knocked on the door three times, but he claimed the woman was being sick. The couple left the train at Ramsgate. The victim reported the incident to her family and the British Transport Police the following day. Davies claimed the activity was consensual, but a jury found him guilty.
Found guilty by jury of rape on 7 February.

Malcolm Nix, 55, of Holt Street, Nonington, a plumber, carried out sex attacks on two girls in the 1990s alongside his father. In 2013, police investigated after victims' complaints, seizing his laptop containing 160 indecent images of children. He denied 14 offences but was convicted on all charges. He had a prior conviction in 2013 for a sex attack on a woman, for which he received a suspended sentence, and earlier this year for eight more offences.
Convicted of eight sex offences against children in the 1990s, plus prior convictions for other sex offences. Judge Heather Norton noted he was devoid of emotion and must serve six years before parole eligibility. This sentence includes a nine-year custodial term with an extra three years on licence for earlier offences.

Loui Allman, 33, of St Eanswythe Way, was walking along Sandgate Road towards the town centre in the early hours of Saturday 21 August 2021 when he began to shout and verbally abuse a group of people he had crossed paths with. When one of the men spoke back, Allman produced a knife and stabbed him twice in the side of his body, piercing his lung. The victim, in his 20s, was airlifted to a London hospital. Allman fled the scene but was quickly identified and arrested by Kent Police later that day.
Pleaded guilty to wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and possession of a knife. Will serve six years before eligible for release on parole.

Marcus James

Marcus James, 64, and the victim both lived in the Bouverie Road area of Folkestone and had previously had a disagreement about him playing loud music at his flat. On 15 August 2020, James shouted threats from near her flat and repeatedly made racially-aggravated remarks. A week later, James was again heard near the victim’s flat shouting that he had paid someone to kill her. The day after that, he made further threats. After the incidents were reported to Kent Police, James was arrested on 25 August that year and bailed with conditions not to contact the victim, pending further enquiries. However, within hours of being released, the victim again heard him near her flat, shouting threats, abuse and claiming he could see her. Police attended and arrested James for a second time and he was later charged.
Convicted following a trial. The sentencing judge also imposed a three-year restraining order preventing James from contacting the victim.

The money financed a lavish lifestyle including two cars, a caravan, a holiday to America, expensive family gifts, Take That concert tickets, clearing credit card bills, expensive meals, dental treatment for her daughter, a cooker, a £500 coffee machine, and a 'chicken house'.

Skirrow did not stop at the crossroad. The motorcyclist, a man in his 70s, died at the scene. Skirrow was arrested at the scene and charged with causing death by dangerous driving, causing death by driving a vehicle while unlicensed and uninsured.

Maksims Seluks

Maksims Seluks was part of a trio linked to the thefts of 29 vehicles from Ashford, Hawkinge, Tonbridge, Tenterden and Maidstone in October and November 2022. The thieves travelled from east London in vehicles with cloned number plates, targeting BMWs, Mercedes and Range Rovers in Kent, which were then driven to Essex and London to be stripped and sold for parts. Seluks was arrested on 8 December 2022 near Sittingbourne along with Satas.

Between September and October 2020, Lucretia Stanescu, 29, from Dagenham, committed 14 theft offences against shop staff in Dover, Whitstable, Canterbury, Maidstone, Hoo and Gillingham, as well as individual offences in Grays (Essex) and Warwick (Warwickshire). The investigation started after she stole jewellery worth £100,000 from a shop in Tenterden High Street, using a guitar to obscure her actions and captured on CCTV leaving in a red Peugeot, which was stopped by police in Berkshire three days later. She used a consistent modus operandi of distracting staff with questions while discreetly stealing valuable items like phones and jewellery, often captured on CCTV.
Pleaded guilty to conspiracy to steal. Lifetime order to pay back what she stole in full.

Plain clothes officers on patrol in Folkestone in November 2022 watched Lueul Ehdego acting suspiciously in the Cheriton Road area. Officers attempted to stop him but he ran off and was chased and arrested nearby. He discarded objects while running, including a package containing 38 wraps of cocaine and heroin. A further search uncovered a phone used to run the 'Mr King' county line in the area between September and November 2022.
Convicted of being concerned in the supply of heroin and cocaine. County line drug dealer operating the 'Mr King' line.

Luke Fogorolli, 18, from Canterbury, joined Jack Barron in assaulting a 17-year-old victim in Rose Lane, Canterbury city centre, on Thursday 6 June 2019, by kicking the victim's head after Barron struck him with a bag of bricks, causing serious head injuries and long-term brain damage requiring ongoing treatment. Fogorolli was heard boasting and laughing after the assault. This was part of a wider incident investigated by Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate.
Found guilty by jury of grievous bodily harm with intent. Pleaded guilty earlier to violent disorder. Also sentenced for possessing drugs with intent to supply and possession of an offensive weapon.

Kieran Martin and Luke Tudor approached two men carrying shopping in Addington Road, Margate on 17 March 2022, demanded alcohol from their bags, pushed them when refused, and stole the bottles. Later the same day, they approached an off-duty taxi driver, demanded a lift despite him not working, took him to a pharmacy, assaulted him, damaged his car, and stole a pencil case containing his fares.
Admitted robbery and other offences. Aged 36, from Margate.

Lee Owen and Liam Scott targeted small businesses and a charity in Faversham and east Kent with 12 break-ins and one attempt between November 2021 and January 2022. Incidents included: Church Street, Whitstable on 11 November 2021 (cash stolen); Seasalter on 20 December 2021 (cash, speakers, headphones stolen); two businesses in Jubilee Way, Faversham and attempted third on 1 January 2022 (cash stolen); two businesses in Herne Bay on 5 January 2022; businesses in Aylesham, Ash, and a takeaway and charity in Faversham later that month. Identified via CCTV and linked by clothing after arrests in February.
Denied the offence following a trial. Of no fixed address.

Lee Walker, 35, and Alex Vassallo, 28, were seen acting suspiciously in Milton Avenue, Margate, on the evening of Saturday 18 June 2022, exchanging a bag. Officers found a rucksack containing an 8mm Bruni pistol and cocaine with a street value of up to £20,000.
From Ramsgate. Admitted possession of a firearm and possession of cocaine with intent to supply.

Lena Brown stole from shops in Broadstairs, Ramsgate and Margate in March and April 2021. On 20 March 2021, she stole cosmetics from Savers store in Margate. On 1 April 2021, she attempted to steal toiletries worth £90 from Wilko at Westwood Cross but abandoned them. On 8 April 2021, she stole children’s toys and laundry detergent from the same Wilko store. On 10 April 2021, she stole £80 of goods including lamb steaks, chicken fillets, cheese, juice and laundry pods from Co-op in Minster.
Admitted the offences. Breached three-year Criminal Behaviour Order imposed in 2019. 32-year-old of no fixed address.

Leon Davis from Erith ran a county line group called ‘Deano’ which sold cocaine and heroin to users in Margate. Officers found messages offering the drugs from October 2019. Working with the Met Police, Kent Police identified Davis as running the line. He was arrested in November 2019 and released under investigation, then arrested again in south-east London on 15 May 2020 along with a 17-year-old boy and charged.
Admitted being concerned in the supply of cocaine and heroin. Ran the 'Deano' county line. Passed running of the line to a 17-year-old boy before his arrest.
Leon Melson

Leon Melson, 20, from Ashford, broke into a property in Lauren Van Der Post Way, Ashford, on Friday 21 July 2023 at around 11.30pm, with Jack Grindley, a 17-year-old boy and Ella Steadman who waited outside. Furniture and other items were damaged and threats were made to the victim, who knew the offenders, fled the scene but returned later to find jewellery, cash and designer clothing missing.
Pleaded guilty to burglary and affray.
Leslie Iles

Leslie Iles, 61, homeless, was arrested by Kent Police in March 2017 after a victim reported historical child sex offences from 2008-2009. He was tried and found guilty of rape and a sexual assault at Canterbury Crown Court on 27 March 2018. He was sentenced on 9 May 2018.
Found guilty after the victim came forward bravely. Detective Inspector Rebecca Philpott praised the victim's courage and expressed hope this reassures anyone suffering from an unreported sexual offence that justice can be done.
Levi Smith

John Reading and Levi Smith attacked a man following an argument at the bar in a pub on Church Road, Willesborough, Ashford on 15 August 2019. The victim had entered the pub for a pool tournament but was approached by Reading and Smith, who began an argument. They followed him as he tried to leave; Smith punched him in the face, Reading repeatedly hit him, knocking him down. The victim was punched, kicked in the face, put in a chokehold, and Reading dropped a fire extinguisher on his back. Smith was arrested on 9 September 2019.

Lewis Bennett, 27, repeatedly stole handbags and wallets from vehicles in Folkestone and Hawkinge areas and fraudulently used victims' bank cards at petrol stations, shops, taxis, takeaways and online gambling. Incidents included: breaking into a caravan in Dymchurch on 12 August 2020 and stealing a handbag; breaking into a vehicle in Hawkinge on 1 September 2020 and taking a wallet; stealing a handbag from a car footwell in Hawkinge the next day; stealing two more handbags from cars in Folkestone between 1 and 6 September 2020. Also sentenced for possessing a BB gun on 28 July 2020 after sending threatening messages to a woman in Folkestone. Tracked via CCTV and arrested in a tent near Hawkinge on 8 September 2020.
Admitted twenty charges including multiple counts of theft and fraud, burglary, possession of cannabis, driving offence, possession of an imitation firearm, malicious communications and public order offence.
Lewis Blake

Lewis Blake took deposits totalling £64,774 from 89 victims between August 2020 and May 2021 for window shutter installations that never materialised. Instead, he gambled the money away, losing over £100,000, and spent on adult websites. He ordered only 14 shutters during this period and made excuses blaming Covid-19 and shipping issues.
Pleaded guilty to fraud. Banned from being a company director for seven years.
