He purchased the weapons from legitimate UK sellers and acquired specialist equipment for conversion, using fake names, false addresses, and exploiting a vulnerable man's bank card to order parts delivered to an Erdington address. The police investigation started after receiving information about the orders, leading to his arrest on January 28, 2024. A search recovered the nine guns, conversion setup, parts, and ammunition-making equipment. The guns were deemed illegal as they were readily convertible, and Malang was convicted as if possessing live-firing weapons.

He was arrested in 2020 following the investigation.
