The offences were reported in August 2021; he was arrested shortly afterwards and charged in January 2023 following an investigation by the Rape and Serious Sexual Offences team.

Craig Blyth, aged 64, of Wadham Street, Penkhull, was caught after his partner reported him to police in May 2024 following a screenshot of his comment 'hot' on a photo of a teenage girl on a Facebook page called 'Dating site for nine to 18 year olds', where others called him a 'paedo'. She confronted him, checked his tablet's browsing history, and found evidence of viewing indecent images of children. Police seized his devices, including a computer tower, and discovered 11,262 indecent images of children and 59 indecent videos. He had been searching for child pornography for 12 years. Blyth was arrested at his Hanley workplace and admitted the offenses.
Admitted two counts of possessing extreme pornography and prohibited images of children; possessing accessible images of children; and possessing inaccessible images of children. Put on the Sex Offenders' Register for a decade. Made the subject of a five-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order. Judge praised the bravery of his then-partner for reporting him.

On October 23, 2023, Joshua Woolley, under the influence of drugs, committed a spree of three robberies in Stoke-on-Trent. He entered a taxi with a woman, directed the driver towards the town centre, turned off the internal camera, demanded money, produced a knife, threatened the driver who fled, and then drove off in the cab. He then went to an Asda petrol station, filled a basket with items including tobacco, knocked products from shelves during an altercation with an employee who tried to stop him, held a bottle above his head, produced a knife, and escaped, injuring the worker's arm. Finally, at The Potteries Centre in Hanley, he approached a woman, grabbed her two necklaces worth £2,000, choked her by pulling them with force until they snapped, and was confronted by the victim and a security guard; the damaged necklaces were recovered.
Pleaded guilty to three charges of robbery and three charges of possessing a knife in public. Ingested significant quantities of illicit substances including zopliclone. Judge noted the three robberies were extremely serious with significant impact on victims. Must serve two thirds of custodial term before release.
Devon Bentley

In February 2024, Devon Bentley forced his way into an empty home in Stoke-on-Trent through the garage door and stole items worth £1,655, including a wedding dress, medication, ornaments, a model racing car, a suitcase, and two coats. Forensic evidence linked him to the scene, and stolen items were found at his house. He was arrested and questioned in March 2024. Additionally, he was linked via DNA to the theft of an Audi A6 from Stone on 9 October 2023, and the same vehicle was used in thefts of a mountain bike from Cellarhead on 11 October 2023 and a motocross bike from Werrington.
Pleaded guilty to burglary, theft and handling stolen goods. Judge commented on his chaotic life and the need to change for the sake of his child.

On November 27, 2023, at 11am on Waterloo Road, Cobridge, Stoke-on-Trent, Mohammed Amin, under the influence of monkey dust, entered a taxi but was asked to leave by the driver who called the police. Attempting to escape, he tried to enter a car occupied by a mother and daughter, wielding two knives (a silver knife and a black box cutter), causing significant distress. He also attempted to board a bus and held a knife to his own throat during restraint by police who used a taser and PAVA spray. The knives were found on his person; he claimed the silver knife was found in the taxi and believed the car belonged to a friend.
Pleaded guilty to two charges of common assault, two charges of possession of a knife in public, and one count of vehicle interference. Under the influence of monkey dust, experienced paranoia, higher risk of re-offending when using drugs. In custody for three months prior to sentencing.

Jason Perks, aged 32, of Biddulph, turned up at the victim’s address in November 2021 demanding £20 that the victim owed him. He ripped off the victim's doorbell camera. Later that day, Perks met the victim in Biddulph, where the victim was in the passenger seat of a car. Perks punched the victim in the head and stabbed him in the leg and arm with a craft knife. Bystanders intervened and stopped the attack. The victim was not seriously injured.
Previously admitted wounding/inflicting grievous bodily harm without intent and possession of an offensive weapon in a public place.

Simon Murch
Rape of a girl under 13 *

In June 2023, Simon Murch, a 55-year-old former primary school teacher, exchanged messages with a 12-year-old schoolgirl who claimed to be 18 and asked to be her sugar daddy. He requested nude photos from her and sent her an explicit video of himself. He gave her money via PayPal and arranged to meet her for sex. On 24 June 2023, he picked her up near her house and took her to a hotel room in Stoke-on-Trent where he raped her. Afterwards, he took her to a toyshop and spent £500 on her. The offending came to light in July 2023 when the child disclosed to a safeguarding teacher at school that she had a 'sugar daddy'. When arrested, Murch claimed he thought she was 18, but her appearance clearly indicated otherwise.
Pleaded guilty at first hearing to one count of rape of a girl under 13. Placed on sex offender’s register for life and subject to indefinite sexual harm prevention order (SHPO). Former primary school teacher.
Mason Shaw

On December 24, 2023, Mason Shaw, aged 24, from Taylor Street, Goldenhill, strangled his partner and spat in her face after she refused to give him £20 to buy cocaine. The incident occurred during a row in their home where they lived with their child. Shaw caused damage to the property, including smashing a vase of sentimental value belonging to her late grandmother, a mirror, door handle, and throwing items like a glass and dog bowl. He pushed her to the floor, strangled her with both hands, and shouted 'How does it feel to be told no'. The victim felt she was going to die and escaped to a neighbour's house, where Shaw was verbally abusive. She described being heartbroken over the damaged vase and feeling unsafe in her home.
Pleaded guilty to criminal damage and strangulation. Subject to a restraining order preventing contact with victim's neighbour for five years. Judge commented on the disgusting, cowardly, and gratuitous behaviour in a domestic context, with no prospect of rehabilitation.

Christopher Pedley stole two Mitsubishi trucks from addresses in Longton and Milton, as well as £1,500 worth of tools from inside, between November and December 2022. He also broke into a Ford Transit in Upper Tean and took a tyre compressor and a battery pack from inside. He was arrested on 23rd December 2022 in connection with the thefts.
Pleaded guilty to driving while disqualified, using a motor vehicle on the road without insurance, driving a motor vehicle taken without the owner’s consent, two counts of theft from a motor vehicle and two counts of theft of a motor vehicle. Disqualified from driving for more than five years and ordered to pay a surcharge of £228.
Carla Foster

Carla Foster, aged 45, illegally procured an abortion by obtaining abortion pills from the British Pregnancy Advisory Service (BPAS) during lockdown in 2020, lying about being 7 weeks pregnant when she was actually between 32 and 34 weeks. She self-administered the pills at home, resulting in a stillbirth. She was charged with child destruction and pleaded not guilty, but later admitted the alternative charge of administering drugs or using instruments to procure abortion. She made early admissions, which led to prosecution. Following the stillbirth, she was traumatised, wracked by guilt, and depressed, with evidence of an emotionally unstable personality.
Originally sentenced to 28 months imprisonment by Mr Justice Pepperall, reduced on appeal due to personal mitigation, compassion rather than punishment, and detrimental effect of custody on her and her family. Pleaded guilty to administering drugs or using instruments to procure abortion after initially denying child destruction. Case involved emotional turmoil, guilt, and depression following stillbirth.

On 8 September 2021, officers searched Reece Edwards' address on Whieldon Road, Fenton, Stoke-on-Trent, discovering a large bag of crack cocaine valued at approximately £2,700 in a bedside drawer, along with two bags of cannabis, two mobile phones, and zip-locked deal bags. A further search uncovered two scales, three mobile phones, a large bag of cannabis, and £135 in cash. In his nearby parked Vauxhall Astra, police found £475 in cash and four additional mobile devices. In total, approximately 218 grams of cannabis with an estimated street value of over £2,100 and over 30 grams of crack cocaine valued at over £3,000 were seized.

Robert Hicks, aged 68 and formerly of Campbell Road, Stoke on Trent, breached his indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order on three occasions. In February 2022, he sent an inappropriate image to a woman via WhatsApp. Police found an additional SIM card and a hidden tablet device in his home during a search. He admitted the WhatsApp account was his but provided no explanation for accessing the service, claimed to have forgotten about the tablet which he had possessed for three years without declaring it, and declined to provide the correct PIN for the device. He was aware that possessing these items breached his order.
Admitted to three breaches of his indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order. Previously a registered sex offender.

On 30 December 2021 at around 1.30am, Alan Raymond Davis threatened the victim with a knife and held it to her throat while on the stairs of a property. The victim sustained a cut to her ear and managed to escape. Davis was detained shortly after and arrested on suspicion of making threats to kill and assaulting a person thereby occasioning actual bodily harm.

Jamie Lines used an anonymous username to exploit children on internet forums, saving indecent pictures and movies to his personal device. In July 2019, officers acted on intelligence and executed a search warrant at his property in Leek, where various devices were seized and examined. He was found to be in possession of 31 indecent images and 13 movies, eight of which were Category A, the most severe classification.

Daniel Tyrone Hemmings raped a woman in 2021 after making unwanted advances and ignoring her efforts to stop him. Following their breakup, which occurred after she discovered he was a registered sex offender, he repeatedly harassed and tormented his ex-girlfriend in Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire. He sent threatening messages and calls, including threats to set fire to her house with her and her son in it, and admitted to getting off on raping little girls. The victim felt unsafe, forcing her son to live with a relative out of fear. She reported the rape to police a few days later; Hemmings was arrested, denied the offence, but was found guilty by a jury at an earlier hearing. Staffordshire Police secured charges due to the survivor's bravery and their evidence.
Found guilty of rape by jury; pleaded guilty to harassment without violence, sending communication threatening death, failing to comply with notification requirements of the Sex Offender's Register, and stalking involving serious harm and distress. Served with a restraining order and ordered to pay £228 financial penalty. Prior convictions in 2017 for sexual activity with a child under 16 and in 2021 for rape against a different woman.

On Saturday 19 June 2021, at approximately 6.05pm, Adrian David Bryan, aged 41, of St Johns Road, Biddulph, entered a property in Biddulph wearing a black woollen ski mask with eye holes. He threatened the victim with a knife and demanded money. The victim was not injured but was left shaken and scared. Bryan was arrested within two hours of the incident.
Pleaded guilty to robbery and possession of an offensive weapon in a public place on 15 November and to possession of cocaine in June. Described as a dangerous individual by investigating officer.

Jonathan Mellor, 52, of May Place, Fenton, Stoke-on-Trent, was interviewed in 2018 after the now-adult victim reported abuse experienced as a child. He was convicted of non-recent child sex abuse, specifically four charges of indecent assault of a male child and gross indecency with a male child.

Usman Mohammed Farooq

On 11 January 2019, Usman Mohammed Farooq pulled out quickly from a junction on Uttoxeter Road towards Blythe Bridge in Draycott without looking properly, causing a collision with 50-year-old motorcyclist Martin Barker who was riding his Kawasaki motorcycle. A blue VW Golf behind Mr Barker attempted an emergency stop but Mr Barker ended up beneath the vehicle, sustaining serious injuries. He died the following day at Royal Stoke University Hospital.
Found guilty after trial. Also handed a two-year driving ban to commence upon release and required to take an extended re-test.

On 12 March 2020, the victim handed over £300 and watched Doherty wash her driveway, during which another man entered her property and stole £2,000 in cash. Doherty was disturbed by a woman collecting money for milk deliveries. The victim was left shaken but unhurt. Following inquiries, Doherty was arrested, charged, and admitted the offences on 17 May 2021.

CCTV footage captured Smith repeatedly approaching Hackney, who was on the phone, aggressively speaking to him, kicking him in the back causing him to tumble down stone steps, pursuing him, dragging him by his coat, scuffling briefly after Hackney fought back, and then taking Hackney's belongings including his phone before walking away calmly.

On November 30, 2009, in Festival Park, Cobridge, Stoke, Shaun Edwards, a dentist, clashed with 67-year-old Albert Finney during morning rush hour. Edwards pulled out in his black BMW, causing Finney in his red van to brake suddenly. Later, Finney blocked Edwards and got out to explain. Edwards approached, warned Finney not to tangle with him, then headbutted and punched him, knocking out teeth and breaking his cheekbone. Edwards claimed self-defence with a 'girlish swing' but admitted the offence.
Admitted inflicting grievous bodily harm. Suspended from profession for 12 months by General Dental Council. Expressed remorse and commitment to rehabilitation.

At around 2am on Sunday 15 September 2019 Alexander’s victim was waiting in Sandbach Road, Cobridge. A Ford Mondeo pulled up and Alexander, who was known to her, got out and went to the boot of the car. He took something from the boot and put it in his pocket. As he walked over to her he took something from his pocket and struck her several times to the head. She fell to the floor and was unsure afterwards if she had lost consciousness or not, but was able to remember Alexander driving away. She suffered swelling to her jaw, cuts inside her lip, mouth and to her nose, and bruising to her right eye.
Found guilty following a trial. Subject to a curfew, compensation, costs, and a restraining order. Registered sex offender.

Ian Pawlowski, 44, from Ball Green, Stoke-on-Trent, operated across Stoke-on-Trent, Newcastle-under-Lyme, and Biddulph between May and September of the previous year. His offences included stealing a Honda VRF, a Lexmoto Adrenaline motorbike, a bank card from a Vauxhall Corsa, two motorbikes (Honda CBR600 RR5 and KTM 530 EXC) from Powerslide Motorcycles, a Land Rover Discovery, and being seen driving a stolen Skoda Octavia. He was arrested after attempting to flee and cannabis was found in his possession.
Convicted on nine charges including two counts of motor vehicle theft, burglary, fraud by false representation, and possession of cannabis. Pleaded not guilty.
