In June 2023, Simon Murch, a 55-year-old former primary school teacher, exchanged messages with a 12-year-old schoolgirl who claimed to be 18 and asked to be her sugar daddy. He requested nude photos from her and sent her an explicit video of himself. He gave her money via PayPal and arranged to meet her for sex. On 24 June 2023, he picked her up near her house and took her to a hotel room in Stoke-on-Trent where he raped her. Afterwards, he took her to a toyshop and spent £500 on her. The offending came to light in July 2023 when the child disclosed to a safeguarding teacher at school that she had a 'sugar daddy'. When arrested, Murch claimed he thought she was 18, but her appearance clearly indicated otherwise.
Pleaded guilty at first hearing to one count of rape of a girl under 13. Placed on sex offender’s register for life and subject to indefinite sexual harm prevention order (SHPO). Former primary school teacher.
Mason Shaw

On December 24, 2023, Mason Shaw, aged 24, from Taylor Street, Goldenhill, strangled his partner and spat in her face after she refused to give him £20 to buy cocaine. The incident occurred during a row in their home where they lived with their child. Shaw caused damage to the property, including smashing a vase of sentimental value belonging to her late grandmother, a mirror, door handle, and throwing items like a glass and dog bowl. He pushed her to the floor, strangled her with both hands, and shouted 'How does it feel to be told no'. The victim felt she was going to die and escaped to a neighbour's house, where Shaw was verbally abusive. She described being heartbroken over the damaged vase and feeling unsafe in her home.
Pleaded guilty to criminal damage and strangulation. Subject to a restraining order preventing contact with victim's neighbour for five years. Judge commented on the disgusting, cowardly, and gratuitous behaviour in a domestic context, with no prospect of rehabilitation.

He also broke into a Ford Transit in Upper Tean and took a tyre compressor and a battery pack from inside. He was arrested on 23rd December 2022 in connection with the thefts.
Pleaded guilty to driving while disqualified, using a motor vehicle on the road without insurance, driving a motor vehicle taken without the owner’s consent, two counts of theft from a motor vehicle and two counts of theft of a motor vehicle. Disqualified from driving for more than five years and ordered to pay a surcharge of £228.

Carla Foster, aged 45, illegally procured an abortion by obtaining abortion pills from the British Pregnancy Advisory Service (BPAS) during lockdown in 2020, lying about being 7 weeks pregnant when she was actually between 32 and 34 weeks. She self-administered the pills at home, resulting in a stillbirth. She was charged with child destruction and pleaded not guilty, but later admitted the alternative charge of administering drugs or using instruments to procure abortion. She made early admissions, which led to prosecution. Following the stillbirth, she was traumatised, wracked by guilt, and depressed, with evidence of an emotionally unstable personality.
Originally sentenced to 28 months imprisonment by Mr Justice Pepperall, reduced on appeal due to personal mitigation, compassion rather than punishment, and detrimental effect of custody on her and her family. Pleaded guilty to administering drugs or using instruments to procure abortion after initially denying child destruction. Case involved emotional turmoil, guilt, and depression following stillbirth.

On 8 September 2021, officers searched Reece Edwards' address on Whieldon Road, Fenton, Stoke-on-Trent, discovering a large bag of crack cocaine valued at approximately £2,700 in a bedside drawer, along with two bags of cannabis, two mobile phones, and zip-locked deal bags. A further search uncovered two scales, three mobile phones, a large bag of cannabis, and £135 in cash. In his nearby parked Vauxhall Astra, police found £475 in cash and four additional mobile devices. In total, approximately 218 grams of cannabis with an estimated street value of over £2,100 and over 30 grams of crack cocaine valued at over £3,000 were seized.

Robert Hicks
Breaching Sexual Harm Prevention Order *

Robert Hicks, aged 68 and formerly of Campbell Road, Stoke on Trent, breached his indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order on three occasions. In February 2022, he sent an inappropriate image to a woman via WhatsApp. Police found an additional SIM card and a hidden tablet device in his home during a search. He admitted the WhatsApp account was his but provided no explanation for accessing the service, claimed to have forgotten about the tablet which he had possessed for three years without declaring it, and declined to provide the correct PIN for the device. He was aware that possessing these items breached his order.
Admitted to three breaches of his indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order. Previously a registered sex offender.

On 30 December 2021 at around 1.30am, Alan Raymond Davis threatened the victim with a knife and held it to her throat while on the stairs of a property. The victim sustained a cut to her ear and managed to escape. Davis was detained shortly after and arrested on suspicion of making threats to kill and assaulting a person thereby occasioning actual bodily harm.

Jamie Lines used an anonymous username to exploit children on internet forums, saving indecent pictures and movies to his personal device. In July 2019, officers acted on intelligence and executed a search warrant at his property in Leek, where various devices were seized and examined. Daniel Tyrone Hemmings raped a woman in 2021 after making unwanted advances and ignoring her efforts to stop him. Following their breakup, which occurred after she discovered he was a registered sex offender, he repeatedly harassed and tormented his ex-girlfriend in Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire. He sent threatening messages and calls, including threats to set fire to her house with her and her son in it, and admitted to getting off on raping little girls. The victim felt unsafe, forcing her son to live with a relative out of fear. She reported the rape to police a few days later; Hemmings was arrested, denied the offence, but was found guilty by a jury at an earlier hearing. Staffordshire Police secured charges due to the survivor's bravery and their evidence.
Found guilty of rape by jury; pleaded guilty to harassment without violence, sending communication threatening death, failing to comply with notification requirements of the Sex Offender's Register, and stalking involving serious harm and distress. On Saturday 19 June 2021, at approximately 6.05pm, Adrian David Bryan, aged 41, of St Johns Road, Biddulph, entered a property in Biddulph wearing a black woollen ski mask with eye holes. He threatened the victim with a knife and demanded money. The victim was not injured but was left shaken and scared. Bryan was arrested within two hours of the incident.
Pleaded guilty to robbery and possession of an offensive weapon in a public place on 15 November and to possession of cocaine in June. Described as a dangerous individual by investigating officer.

Indecent assault of a male child and gross indecency with a male child *

Jonathan Mellor, 52, of May Place, Fenton, Stoke-on-Trent, was interviewed in 2018 after the now-adult victim reported abuse experienced as a child. He was convicted of non-recent child sex abuse, specifically four charges of indecent assault of a male child and gross indecency with a male child.
Found guilty following a trial. Subject to a sexual harm prevention order for ten years and will remain on the sex offenders’ register for life. Already on the register since 2000 due to previous convictions for indecent assault on a male and indecency with a child.
Usman Mohammed Farooq

On 11 January 2019, Usman Mohammed Farooq pulled out quickly from a junction on Uttoxeter Road towards Blythe Bridge in Draycott without looking properly, causing a collision with 50-year-old motorcyclist Martin Barker who was riding his Kawasaki motorcycle. A blue VW Golf behind Mr Barker attempted an emergency stop but Mr Barker ended up beneath the vehicle, sustaining serious injuries. He died the following day at Royal Stoke University Hospital.
Found guilty after trial. Also handed a two-year driving ban to commence upon release and required to take an extended re-test.

Simon Doherty, 51, of Willow Park, Horton, Leighton Buzzard, conned a 94-year-old woman out of £300 by promising to repave her driveway in Meir. On 12 March 2020, the victim handed over £300 and watched Doherty wash her driveway, during which another man entered her property and stole £2,000 in cash. Doherty was disturbed by a woman collecting money for milk deliveries. The victim was left shaken but unhurt. Following inquiries, Doherty was arrested, charged, and admitted the offences on 17 May 2021.
Admitted fraud and burglary. No comment in interview. Case described as callous and targeted theft against a vulnerable elderly person.

Brian Martin Moynihan, 66, of Chapel Street, Silverdale, raped and sexually assaulted a child on 12 counts of rape and two counts of sexual assault. Edwards pulled out in his black BMW, causing Finney in his red van to brake suddenly. Later, Finney blocked Edwards and got out to explain. Edwards approached, warned Finney not to tangle with him, then headbutted and punched him, knocking out teeth and breaking his cheekbone. Edwards claimed self-defence with a 'girlish swing' but admitted the offence.

A couple of minutes before they got to Grange Road, Egerton was racially abusive to the taxi driver and threatened him with violence and that he would steal his taxi. He then demanded money from the taxi driver and ran off with £19. A video of the incident was circulated on social media on 18 January 2020 and Egerton was arrested on 21 January 2020.

Samuel Wilton, aged 24, of Barrie Gardens, Talke, engaged in controlling and coercive behaviour towards his pregnant partner between March and October 2025, restricting her movements, isolating her from friends and family, monitoring her actions, preventing her from leaving the address, controlling her personal care, pestering her for sex despite her illness, and making threats about the unborn baby including restrictions on cuddling or walking it and suggestions it would not be kept. On September 26, 2025, he assaulted her by repeatedly pushing her, dragging her into the living area, and taking her phone when she sought help. After the relationship ended and while on bail, he breached conditions by sending threatening messages to her and her mother, including threats to burn down the family home and harm family members. Victim now suffers flashbacks and panic attacks; discovered prior similar behaviour via Clare's Law.
Convicted after trial of controlling and coercive behaviour and assault by beating. Pleaded guilty to witness intimidation. In custody for six months prior to sentencing. Subject to a restraining order prohibiting contact with victims for five years. Judge noted he treated victim very badly, controlled her life, was violent, and caused serious alarm and distress.

Rafakat Abbas

Rafakat Abbas, aged 30, from Lilleshall Street in Dresden, was the driver of a grey Audi A4 in the early hours of 3 November 2020 when it was involved in a single-vehicle collision on Sandon Road in Meir at the junction of Queensmead Road. The Audi was travelling at 115 miles-per-hour as it approached the right-hand bend, on a 30 mile-per-hour road. Abbas lost control of the vehicle, and following its collision with a residential wall, the vehicle was found on its roof. Front seat passenger Paul Hammersley, aged 65, from Meir, was pronounced dead at the scene. Abbas failed to provide a specimen of blood for analysis and admitted during police interview that a quantity of cannabis found at the scene belonged to him.
Pleaded guilty in May 2021. Handed a four-year driving ban and required to take an extended driving test.
Pardeep Attwal

Peter Nwankwo, 50, of Chell Street, Hanley, was involved in the commercial supply of class A drugs including cocaine, heroin and crack cocaine to a dealer line in Stoke-on-Trent and North Staffordshire. Arrested last July at his Chell Street address where over £100,000 worth of cocaine, significant amounts of heroin, crack cocaine, ecstasy, cannabis and £27,385 cash were seized. A Nokia phone linked to drug supply was found. He was supplying large quantities to the dealer line, not directly to street users.
Pleaded guilty to four charges of possession of a class A drug with intent to supply; possession of the class B drug cannabis with intent to supply; and possession of criminal property. Mitigating factors included financial struggles, dyslexia, remorse. Judge noted he was in control of an operation supplying drugs to a dealer line.

Matthew Charlesworth

Matthew Charlesworth, of St Aidan’s Street in Tunstall, contacted who he thought were four 14-year-old girls on social media in May 2020. The girls were in fact adults who later arranged to meet Charlesworth on 11 June. The police were alerted and seized Charlesworth’s phone before he was arrested a day later. In interview, Charlesworth initially denied the communications and claimed his phone and social media accounts had been hacked, but later admitted the offences.
Admitted three counts of attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child and three counts of breaching previous SHPO. Previously jailed for three years in 2017 for child sexual offences. Made subject of indefinite SHPO, placed on sex offenders’ register for life, and barred from activities involving children and vulnerable adults.

Lamin Jallow, 46, from West Lothian, was involved alongside Peter Nwankwo in supplying class A drugs to a dealer line in Stoke-on-Trent. Arrested last July at a Sackville Street address controlled by Nwankwo after being seen entering his BMW, from which £13,000 worth of crack cocaine, 14.6 grams of heroin and £3,550-£4,260 worth of cannabis were seized. His phone showed evidence of supplying cocaine, acting as go-between for contacts including 'Chairman', aware of large cannabis quantities.
Pleaded guilty to being concerned in the supply of a class A drug and possession with intent to supply a class B drug. Mitigating factors included redundancy from a high-paying job, mental health issues, cocaine habit; performed limited function as middle man paid in drugs. Judge noted involvement in the operation with significant communication with Nwankwo.

On December 19, 2024, Jay Norbury, aged 32, of King Street, Fenton, was in J D Wetherspoons, Hanley, with his partner and baby. After drinking six to eight double Jack Daniel's and taking cocaine, he argued with three men who threatened him. He took a serrated steak knife from the pub (from his pizza order), chased the group outside while brandishing it to threaten and intimidate them. No one was injured. On Sunday 19 April 2020 at 11:05pm, Jason Mark Adams was a passenger in a VW Golf driven erratically along King Street, Fenton. The vehicle failed to stop, was pursued for 40 minutes, hit by a stinger, and collided with another vehicle on Uttoxeter Road. Adams was arrested along with the driver. A search uncovered cocaine, £2290 in cash, digital scales, tick list and cannabis in the boot. Evidence from mobile phones linked him to supply and dealing of cocaine and cannabis.
Pleaded guilty to possession with intent to supply cocaine and cannabis.

David Gallimore of Bright Street, Blackpool, abused the trust of a vulnerable woman to access her young child and satisfy his depraved sexual urges. He also sought out indecent images on his personal device, including category A images.
Convicted on 16 July following a four-day trial. Received 22 months for six counts of assault of a child and 10 months for three counts of possession of indecent images of children, to run consecutively. Did not accept responsibility for his actions.

At around 2am on Sunday 15 September 2019 Alexander’s victim was waiting in Sandbach Road, Cobridge. A Ford Mondeo pulled up and Alexander, who was known to her, got out and went to the boot of the car. He took something from the boot and put it in his pocket. As he walked over to her he took something from his pocket and struck her several times to the head. She fell to the floor and was unsure afterwards if she had lost consciousness or not, but was able to remember Alexander driving away. She suffered swelling to her jaw, cuts inside her lip, mouth and to her nose, and bruising to her right eye.
Found guilty following a trial. Subject to a curfew, compensation, costs, and a restraining order. Registered sex offender.
Ian Tomkinson

Ian Tomkinson, 54, of Leek, committed historic child sex offences in the 1980s. Survivors reported him to police in 2021, leading to his questioning in November 2021 and charges in the same month. Police gathered evidence over more than 40 years later, resulting in conviction.

Pleaded guilty to two charges of assault by beating and three offences of assault occasioning actual bodily harm at an earlier hearing.

Angela Vickers, aged 35, who had lived in her flat on Ruxley Road in Bucknall, Stoke-on-Trent for six years, started a fire in her own home in the early hours of December 13 after discovering eviction proceedings by landlord Staffordshire Housing. She had made repeated threats to 'torch' the block following neighbour complaints about her abusive and noisy behaviour. The blaze caused £1,850 worth of damage but firefighters arrived within four minutes and found her asleep on a mattress.
Repeated threats to burn down the flats after eviction proceedings due to complaints of loud music, slamming doors, verbal and written abuse, and gluing locks. Confessed to starting the fire after smoking cannabis.
