No illegal material was found, but there was sexualised conversation with adults. The conspiracy involved the supply of drugs and incitement of vulnerable teenage girls aged 15-16 into prostitution across multiple locations in Newcastle's West End. Nelli supplied drugs to victims to facilitate their coercion into sexual acts, contributing to a wider network of abuse characterised by chaotic all-night parties with heavy drug use. He was one of five men sentenced on 6 September 2017, following the imprisonment of ten others from the same gang.

Robert Black abducted 11-year-old Susan Maxwell while she walked home from a tennis match in Coldstream, Scottish Borders, on July 30, 1982, sexually assaulted and strangled her, then dumped her body 264 miles away in Uttoxeter. He abducted 5-year-old Caroline Hogg from Portobello beach near Edinburgh in July 1983, sexually assaulted and killed her, dumping her body near Twycross on the M1, 310 miles away. On March 26, 1986, he abducted 10-year-old Sarah Harper from Morley, Leeds, after she went to a corner shop; her body was found a month later in the River Trent near Nottingham, 71 miles away. Black used his delivery driver job to travel and dispose of bodies across the UK.

Roy Fella, a 52-year-old man from Sunderland, was sentenced at Newcastle Crown Court for multiple counts of outraging public decency and possessing indecent images of children. His offences involved standing naked at his living room window with the blinds open and masturbating in plain view of passers-by on a busy street. The incidents occurred on nine separate occasions, sometimes as early as 7:30am and other times around 5pm or 6pm. Witnesses described feeling shocked, angry, and appalled. Fella also pleaded guilty to possessing 84 indecent images of children, aged between six and 14. Prior to sentencing, the judge deferred the case to allow Fella to demonstrate he could stay out of trouble, which he did.

On 21 November 2025 in Elswick, Newcastle, Ross Clancy forced entry into the home of 65-year-old Niamh Michelle Cunningham and her partner Jonathan Hall, 60, whom he had never met. He repeatedly struck both victims in the head with a claw hammer during a violent robbery attempt motivated by rumours of cash at the property. Ms Cunningham suffered catastrophic injuries including multiple skull and facial fractures, brain damage requiring surgery, and remains in hospital with permanent cognitive impairment and loss of independence. Mr Hall also sustained serious head injuries. The attack formed part of a three-day crime spree involving multiple robberies. Clancy was sentenced at Newcastle Crown Court on or before 19 May 2026.
Pleaded guilty to attempted murder and GBH with intent. Had 76 prior offences and was on licence from prison. Expressed regret.
Selina Sharafi

Selina Sharafi, then 33 and of Newcastle, carried out a predatory series of physical and digital violations against victims she sexually abused as children. She used a deceptive childhood game of princes and princesses to abuse her targets, then created eleven fake Facebook accounts to troll and cyber-bully a survivor who spoke out. She was convicted at Newcastle Crown Court of five counts of indecent assault and related offences including malicious communications and cyber-stalking.

Shem Jones

Shem Jones, 39, from Wind Street, Llandysul, Ceredigion, travelled seven hours to the North East in June 2021 believing he was meeting a nine-year-old child after messaging who he thought was the child’s mother. In reality, he was communicating with an undercover officer from the North East Regional Organised Crime Unit. Jones sent indecent images and discussed involving the child in a sex ring. He was arrested upon arrival. Examination of his laptop found over 400 images of child abuse. He was charged with arranging the commission of a child sex offence, distributing indecent images, engaging in sexual activity with a child, meeting a child following grooming, and taking/making indecent images. He pleaded guilty to all offences.
Pleaded guilty to all charges. Indefinite sexual harm prevention order also imposed. Travelled seven hours to meet a 9-year-old child, actually an undercover officer, and distributed indecent images.
Russell Liddell

Police raided Russell Liddell's home on Glendower Avenue, North Shields, Tyne & Wear, on April 8, 2020, seizing an SD card, flash-drives and hard-drive containing 17 category A, 10 category B, and 1,227 category C indecent images of children aged 3 to 16, some showing children in pain and distress. He had previously received a community order in 2011 after 4,236 indecent images were found on a phone he left on a bus.
Pleaded guilty to three counts of making indecent images of children. Prior three-year community order in 2011 for possession of indecent images. Recorder Ian Mullarkey noted he had an 'entrenched sexual interest in children'. Ordered to complete 55 rehabilitation activity days, four-month electronic curfew, sex offender programme, 15-year sexual harm prevention order, and 10 years on sex offenders register.

He flouted restrictions by concealing his past from parents and seeking contact without consent. The offences came to light when hostel staff spotted a child in his car. No harm came to the children.

Steven Gibson, 41, of Fenham, Newcastle, headbutted and punched his partner during an argument over trivial matters in May 2025. The argument escalated when Gibson kicked another person, then turned on his partner when she intervened. She suffered a nosebleed, facial swelling and bruising, and a possible fractured nose. She stated she is terrified of him and feels the offence is the 'final straw'. Gibson had been in a five-year relationship with the victim.
Pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm and battery. No previous convictions. Five-year restraining order imposed. Remorseful.

Stephen Osceola Power, a 66-year-old man from Newcastle, subjected a schoolgirl to a prolonged campaign of sexual abuse, including multiple counts of rape, beginning several decades ago. The abuse was described as 'horrific' and left the victim too afraid to report it for years. She came forward in 2019, and Power was arrested. A jury found him guilty on 28 March 2022 at Newcastle Crown Court. She punched the victim in the face, threw a chair at him striking his leg, and made racist comments. She was arrested and expressed remorse, attributing it to drinking too much. The victim suffered a cut lip and was off work for nearly two months.

Oprisan had flown in from Romania to assist in unloading the smuggled goods.

Taherul Alam, known as T-Boss and living on Normanton Terrace in Newcastle, was sentenced to eight years in prison for his involvement in a grooming gang exposed by Operation Sanctuary. This Northumbria Police operation targeted a network of 17 men and one woman who conspired to incite prostitution, supply drugs, and commit sexual offences against vulnerable teenage girls, predominantly aged 15 or 16. Alam's offences included conspiracy to incite prostitution and attempted sexual assault, where he exploited a victim by providing her with mephedrone in exchange for her having sex with his friend. The gang operated from various locations in Newcastle's West End, with all-night parties involving heavy drug use and sexual abuse. He was sentenced on 6 September 2017 after being found guilty alongside four others.

Terry Hopper, aged 37, of Sibthorpe Street, North Shields, systematically targeted two young girls on social media. He created a fake profile under the name 'Matt Hunt', posing as a 15-year-old boy to groom a 13-year-old child, pressuring her into sending explicit images. When they met, he threatened her and forced her into a flat where he raped her. He also stalked a second child aged 12 or 13, monitoring her morning school route and describing her clothing to intimidate her into sending explicit photos. Northumbria Police arrested him in March 2020, and he later pleaded guilty at court.

In the 1980s, Steven Gustafson targeted vulnerable teenage boys at railway hubs in Newcastle and Sunderland, pretending to share an interest in trainspotting to groom them. He sexually assaulted two 14-year-old schoolboys. An initial prosecution in 1999 collapsed due to evidential difficulties, allowing him to remain free for another twenty years. After a second survivor stepped forward in 2017, police reopened the cold case and gathered substantial evidence. Gustafson eventually pleaded guilty to five child sex counts and was sentenced to four and a half years imprisonment at Newcastle Crown Court.

The judge condemned her for using her role as a teacher to fuel the abuse and stated she lacked genuine empathy. In January 2020, William Shotton, 86, of West Street, Berwick-Upon-Tweed, Northumberland, left a note on his door promising a teenage boy under 16 a Christmas card and cash with a heart drawn at the bottom. The boy knocked, Shotton opened the door naked, invited him in, closed the door, then sexually touched the boy's thigh, bottom and genitals over clothing while asking inappropriate questions. The boy struggled with the door lock but escaped.
Found guilty after trial but continues to deny the offence. Made subject to a sexual harm prevention order and must register as a sex offender, both for seven years. Judge Paul Sloan QC noted degree of planning in luring the victim. Defence highlighted poor health, age, army service and good work ethic.
Yiannakis Theodorou

Yiannakis Theodorou was involved in a smuggling operation where over 1.5 million illegal cigarettes, worth more than £526,000 in unpaid duty, were discovered disguised as road surfacing material in a warehouse at Middlefields Industrial Estate, South Shields. The cigarettes were concealed in wooden crates coated with bitumen. HM Revenue and Customs officers raided the warehouse in March 2018 and found Theodorou hiding between lorries. He masterminded the import and distribution of the illicit cigarettes.

William Campbell

On June 18, 2021, at the family home in Silksworth, Sunderland, William Campbell argued with his younger brother Samuel about a dog. William was arrested and later found guilty of murder following a trial.

William Gardner, 51, of North Shields, Tyne and Wear, was subject to a sexual harm prevention order and sex offender notification requirements since 2021 after a 32-month sentence for causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual activity and attempting sexual communication with a child. During a routine risk review at a police station on 6 March 2023, officers examined his phone and discovered he had started a relationship with a woman who has children without informing her of his past. He deleted messages to hide the relationship. He stayed overnight at her home where children were present five or six times. He also used an alias on Facebook to communicate with a 14-year-old girl. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced at Newcastle Crown Court in April 2026 to two years imprisonment.

He played a 'rape game' where he propositioned women, including fellow officers. The offences could have been prevented had colleagues intervened earlier. A report commissioned by Cleveland Police under IPCC supervision revealed systemic failings.

On 21 May 2022 in Newcastle, Warren Richardson, then aged 17, approached a 15-year-old girl whose phone battery had died. He offered to help her charge it, and when a fast food restaurant attempt failed, he invited her to his home on Cross Parade, Elswick. Once there, he raped her. The victim did not return home that night, and her mother reported her missing. The next morning, the victim returned home and told her sister about the assault. Richardson was arrested and later pleaded guilty to rape in July 2023. At sentencing, the victim's mother described the ordeal as 'every parent's worst nightmare' and said it had profoundly affected her daughter during what should be the best years of her life.
Pleaded guilty to rape. Also made subject to an indefinite restraining order, a 10-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order, and must sign onto the Sex Offenders' Register for life.

Tony Watson, of Kingsway, Blackwater, Hampshire, engaged in sexual chat with a profile he believed was a 14-year-old schoolgirl called Amy on the Fast Flirting website in September 2018. He moved conversation to WhatsApp, suggested meeting, camping, asked if she slept naked, about losing virginity, and her genitals. Arranged to meet at Newcastle Central Station where he was arrested by paedophile hunters and police.

He posed online as a good-looking blonde girl or a male alter-ego, depending on the victim, contacted them via social media, and cajoled them into sexual acts on camera without their knowledge. He also possessed indecent images of children and indecently touched boys. Statements from 27 victims were heard at the sentencing hearing.

Declan Fahey deliberately drove his Mazda flatbed truck into a quad bike carrying four people on Redworth Road, Shildon on March 5, after his friend's quad bike was stolen earlier that day. Fahey drove off without providing assistance and later refused to accept responsibility.

She attended the property multiple times but later backed out and informed authorities.

Hoyle claimed he had taken the sword from a robber and was not intending to confront anyone, but the judge rejected his account. The court concluded he had likely returned home, collected the weapon and gone back out seeking revenge. He admitted possession of a bladed article and cannabis.
