Derek Canning
Stealing rare birds *
Sentence
18 months imprisonment
Derek Canning was convicted of stealing rare peregrine falcon chicks from nesting sites in Kielder Forest, giving them false identification, and offering them for sale through specialist magazines to unsuspecting buyers. He was arrested in 1993 when stopped in his car by police and the RSPB’s protection unit, transporting a pair of chicks just 24 hours after two had vanished from Kielder Forest. Pioneering genetic fingerprinting techniques were used to prove his guilt, linking the birds to the stolen ones.
Convicted at trial; sentence upheld by the Court of Appeal in 1996; maintains innocence and claims flawed genetic evidence; went on hunger strike in prison after appeal refusal.
