On June 23, 2024, Kieran Borthwick, a 30-year-old from Bongate, Jedburgh, Scotland, was stopped by police while driving a friend's Seat Leon on Callerton Lane in Kingston Park, Newcastle upon Tyne. Officers noticed a strong smell of cannabis, enlarged pupils, and sweating. Borthwick admitted to smoking cannabis minutes before driving. He failed a roadside drugs test and was arrested. He was visiting the North East from Scotland and drove the car because his friend, the owner, was too intoxicated.
Pleaded guilty to driving while over the specified drugs limit, driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence and driving without insurance. Ordered to pay £40 costs and £48 victim surcharge. Has 29 previous offences, including 19 motoring offences.

On May 13, 2024, around 12pm, Lee Mullen was caught on a Ring doorbell camera behaving oddly at his neighbour's property in Gateshead. He was seen leaving the home without entering notification and later trying the front door handle while topless and appearing under the influence. The neighbour found a Tupperware box containing 145g of cocaine hidden behind their shed, valued up to £14,500 when broken down. Mullen's phone contained messages showing he had been supplying drugs. While on bail, on November 10, 2024, he and another man smashed windows of two women in Gateshead, terrifying them. The next day, November 11, 2024, he rammed police cars in Newcastle city centre, was surrounded, and found in possession of cocaine, temazepam, and a brick.
Pleaded guilty to possessing cocaine with intent to supply on the basis he was warehousing the drugs to pay off a £4,000 drugs debt. Also admitted two counts of criminal damage, dangerous driving, possessing cocaine and temazepam, and failing to comply with a specimen for analysis. Has nine previous convictions, including for possessing heroin and cocaine with intent to supply. Defence stated he got into a huge mess due to drug addiction and has prospects of work, family support, and a home to rebuild his life.

Thomas Kwan, a 53-year-old GP, devised an elaborate plan to murder his mother's partner, Patrick O'Hara, by injecting him with iodomethane, a toxic substance, to secure his mother's inheritance. He forged letters from a fake nursing team, disguised himself, and administered the poison on 22 January 2024, posing as a nurse giving a Covid booster. This led to Mr O'Hara suffering severe pain, necrotising fasciitis, multiple surgeries, and ongoing physical scars and post-traumatic stress disorder.
Pleaded guilty to attempted murder. Judge Mrs Justice Lambert described the offence as exceptionally serious, citing his morbid obsession with toxic chemicals and the serious physical and psychological harm caused to the victim.

Christopher Taylor, aged 40, of Park Road North, Chester-le-Street, County Durham, engaged in two violent attacks on his former partner in their home in Whickham, Gateshead. The first incident occurred on April 12, 2024, when he returned home intoxicated, pushed her backwards onto the sofa by the throat four or five times, then picked her up by the throat and pinned her against the front door, threatening to break her jaw. The relationship ended but they continued living together. The second incident happened on May 26, 2024, when he entered her bedroom around 8am, pulled off the quilt, grabbed her phone to check for messages from other men, pinned her down on the bed by the throat causing her to struggle to breathe, and spat in her face. The victim contacted a friend who alerted the police. Taylor initially claimed self-defence but later admitted the offences.
Pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm, assault by beating and strangulation. Recorder Andrew Latimer presided. Defence noted genuine remorse and impact on his business.
Dean Juric
Making and distributing indecent images of children *

Dean Juric, 54, former headteacher at St Robert of Newminster School in Washington, Tyne and Wear, was arrested at home in January 2024 after being caught communicating with a police decoy posing as a paedophile on a social media site. He shared a picture of two schoolgirls in uniform aged about 15, an indecent image of a girl aged around 14 posing sexually with breasts partially exposed, and later in November 2024 sent a video of a young girl in tight-fitting clothing. Police raid found 54 category A images (including 23 videos), 36 category B images, and 290 category C stills and videos on his iPhone, plus conversations with other paedophiles where he expressed interest in 'schoolgirls' and 'young girls'.
Ordered to complete 150 hours of unpaid work and 40 days of rehabilitation. Judge noted exemplary background and high likelihood of rehabilitation. Must sign sex offenders’ register for 10 years and subject to Sexual Harm Prevention Order for 10 years.
Nganjo Endeley

In September 2021, Nganjo Endeley, an NHS fertility doctor, arrived hours late at Wafi Lounge in Clayton Street West, Newcastle city centre, in a drunken rage. He grabbed the 21-year-old waiter's shirt so tightly that the victim struggled to breathe, then headbutted him, fracturing his eye socket. The victim, who had arrived in the UK from Iraq two years prior and was working his first job, suffered huge pain, a visible dent to his forehead, vision issues, headaches, and dizziness. Endeley was convicted after a trial.
Pleaded not guilty but convicted. Judge Sarah Mallett considered the seriousness of the offence but suspended the sentence. Has completed the unpaid work requirement. Later suspended for 12 months by medical tribunal for fitness to practise.

Daryl Fender, 33, of Chapel Place, Seaton Burn, committed two separate assaults. On March 16, 2024, during celebrations at the Moor House pub in Seaton Burn, North Tyneside, after Newcastle United's Carabao Cup win over Liverpool, Fender struck a woman in the face with a pool cue, causing two lacerations to her lip and chin requiring 11 stitches. Earlier, on August 31, 2023, around 2pm, Fender racially abused and assaulted a driver outside Sainsbury's in Forest Hall, North Tyneside, punching him multiple times, chasing him with a passenger wielding a baseball bat, throwing a sharp metal object at his car, smashing the windscreen by jumping on the bonnet, and causing cuts to the victim's head and ear, plus bruises and a loose tooth. Racist slurs were used during the road rage incident.
Pleaded guilty to racially aggravated assault, wounding, and possessing cannabis. Has 23 previous convictions including assaults and affray. Released on prison licence at the time of the pub offence. Mental health difficulties noted.
Steven Wallace

On October 15, 2023, Steven Wallace, who was more than five times over the drug driving limit, drove his BMW 320i at excessive speed on a residential street in West Denton, Newcastle, while showing off to a passenger. He lost control of the vehicle after taking a roundabout far above the 30mph limit, swerving across the road and colliding with a bus stop where 19-year-old Joe Scott and his girlfriend were waiting. Joe was killed instantly from severe head injuries, and his girlfriend sustained serious leg injuries requiring hospital treatment for five days. Wallace fled the scene after the crash.
Pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving, causing serious injury by dangerous driving, drug driving, failing to stop after an accident, and having no insurance. The sentence was referred to the Attorney General for being unduly lenient, but the appeal failed.

On September 20, 2024, at around 9.30pm, Sean Bell, 34, of Goschen Street, Blyth, stole a BMW 1 series which the driver had left with the keys in the ignition while dropping off food. The victim tried to remove him from the driver's seat but Bell reversed into a parked car before pushing the victim to the ground and driving off. The BMW was later spotted by police on the A188 Benton Lane, in North Tyneside, weaving across the road. Bell drove off at speed, doing 50mph in a 20 zone, in heavy rain. Officers activated lights and sirens but he failed to stop. He was seen throwing a can of alcohol out of the window. Bell then lost control while a double decker bus headed towards him, causing the bus to collide with the car, which was pushed onto a grass verge. Bell ran away but was detained with the help of the police dog unit and found to be over the alcohol limit.
Pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, aggravated vehicle taking, assault by beating, driving while disqualified, drink driving and having no insurance. Has 39 previous convictions, including multiple driving offences. Released straight away due to time spent on remand.

The images had been sent to him over WhatsApp, and he forwarded them to various contacts. When interviewed under caution in 2021, he denied knowledge of the images and denied sending them onwards. He was convicted on three counts of distributing an indecent photograph/pseudo-photograph of a child.
Placed on the sex offenders register for five years and barred from working with children or vulnerable adults. Expressed remorse but denied sexual interest in children and appealed against conviction until recently. Later struck off the register by the General Pharmaceutical Council.

He prevented her from leaving, fearing she would report him to the police. Maughan then committed a vicious physical and sexual assault, including strangling her into unconsciousness and threatening to kill her with knives. The victim escaped through the bathroom window and was found distressed nearby when police arrested Maughan.

On Saturday July 13 2024, Donna Stalker, 34, an NHS worker from Fife, Dunfermline, Scotland, was at the Head of Steam pub in Tynemouth, near Newcastle, on a hen party with friends. During light-hearted interaction, professional boxer Mckenzie Maughan playfully tapped her on the back and head with an inflatable golf club. Irritated, Stalker turned and struck him in the face with a glass, causing it to shatter. The victim suffered significant injuries including a deep laceration to his chin requiring ten stitches, wounds to his nose and lip, impacting his boxing and football activities for up to six months. Stalker fled but surrendered to police after seeing a social media appeal, claiming she intended only to pour a drink but accepting she lashed out in temper.
Pleaded guilty to unlawful wounding. No previous convictions. Has shared care for three children and works part-time in the NHS. Judge noted she did not intend to cause such injury and highlighted dangers of violence involving a glass.

Jennifer O'Brien, 32, of Sunderland, targeted more than 17 stores across the North East, from Belford in North Northumberland to Ryton in Gateshead, stealing goods worth £1,847.77 including booze, food, diffusers, laundry products, pencil cases, tie dye kits, keyrings, toys and gel pens. The thefts occurred over less than a year while she was pregnant and addicted to drugs. She also assaulted shop workers, including in Primark and Waitrose, when confronted.
Pleaded guilty to 17 shop thefts, two assaults and one count of criminal damage. Order lasts until 2027. Has 21 prior convictions for 57 offences. Owes over £7,000 in fines, compensation and surcharges.

Joanne Nicholson, 40, of Stanhope Road, South Shields, tormented her former partner and his new girlfriend with a 16-month campaign of false allegations after their relationship ended in early 2023. She sent letters branding him a paedophile to neighbours and his 80-year-old mother, made at least 15 false police statements, anonymous 999 calls fabricating domestic abuse and rape, leading to multiple arrests of the innocent couple. She tricked family court into issuing a non-molestation order, created fake messages and email addresses, and set up a fake dating profile. The campaign caused severe distress, job loss, and suicidal thoughts for victims. Nicholson was arrested in June 2024 with evidence on her phone.
Pleaded guilty to sending a letter with intent to cause distress or anxiety and doing acts tending to pervert the course of justice. Given a 10-year restraining order. Defence mentioned mental health issues including PTSD and bipolar disorder, and vulnerability in prison.

Between November 14, 2023, and November 24, 2023, Anthony Bonner, 62, of South Shields, communicated online with an undercover police officer posing as an adult female offering access to a live stream of a 12-year-old girl in Asia being sexually abused. After initial hesitation, Bonner inquired about the child performing a sex act and requested to see it immediately. Although he did not complete payment or follow through despite further prompts, he was arrested at his home in June 2024. Police seized devices containing 141 indecent images of children aged 8 to 16. Bonner, a retired merchant seaman with a partner and her adult daughter in Asia whom he financially supports and visits 2-3 times a year, also cares for his elderly parents.
Pleaded guilty to arranging the commission of a child sex offence and three counts of making indecent images of a child. Will have to sign the sex offenders register for life and was given a ten-year sexual harm prevention order with a five-year travel restriction to certain specified countries. Judge Tim Gittins highlighted the defendant's swift engagement in discussions about forcing a child to perform sexual acts and the seriousness of such offences.

On July 18, 2023, in the early hours, officers tried to pull over Mark Branker in Sunderland. After initially appearing to comply, he reversed his car into the police vehicle and sped off, leading a ten-minute chase at up to 80mph in a 30mph zone. He ignored sirens and blue lights, went through a red light, and drove the wrong way around a roundabout. He was arrested after slowing down on the A690 Durham Road.
Admitted dangerous driving. Judge Carolyn Scott noted he deliberately disregarded the rules of the road and remarked it was unbelievable he didn't cause an accident or injure anyone given his driving. Has 164 previous convictions. Car seized and crushed.

Leighton Amies, 15, stabbed 14-year-old Tomasz Oleszak in the chest while walking a friend home through Whitehills Nature Park. He claimed he was attacked and did not know he had stabbed Oleszak, but prosecutors stated this was a lie.
Claimed self-defence but prosecutors said it was a lie. Judge Justice Spencer commented on the public interest in deterring young people from carrying knives to prevent tragic outcomes.

On October 8, 2023, around 9am, on Chillingham Road, Heaton, heading towards Byker, Jess Wraith deliberately drove his car at his ex-partner's sister, who was pushing her one-year-old son in a pushchair. After a heated argument where he threatened to run her and her son over, he reversed the car, revved the engine, mounted the pavement, and struck her, fracturing her ankle which required surgery and a cage fitted to her foot. She was hospitalized for a week in excruciating pain. Wraith then drove off. The incident followed a scene he caused outside a primary school with his ex-partner.
Pleaded guilty. Has 22 previous convictions including assaults, dangerous driving and drug driving. Restraining order imposed.
Andrew Maclean

On the evening of December 1, 2023, during a night out drinking in Newcastle, Andrew MacLean, 25, of Station Road North, Wallsend, became involved in a dispute after being found in possession of a phone that was not his, though there was no suggestion of theft. A row broke out with the group, including the phone's owner. The victim intervened, and MacLean punched and then headbutted him, causing a severe injury that resulted in the victim losing a front tooth, requiring removal and replacement with a false one. The force of the headbutt also caused a deep cut to MacLean's own forehead. The victim reported ongoing pain, sensitivity to cold, and lifelong consequences from the unprovoked assault due to MacLean's temper.
First offence, viewed as isolated incident. Defendant is working and has faced life difficulties not of his own making. Judge Gavin Doig presided.
Anthony Morrison-Taylor

Anthony Morrison-Taylor, 44, of Cellar Hill Close, Newbottle Village, near Houghton-le-Spring, appeared intoxicated on an easyJet flight from Bristol to Newcastle in February 2024. When refused more alcohol due to his condition during a time of turbulence, he became abusive towards cabin crew, shouting 'You can all f*** off, I'm getting alcohol and there's nothing you can do about it' and 'You are all a bunch of *****'. The air steward contacted police via air traffic control, leading to his arrest upon landing at Newcastle Airport. The air steward reported feeling shocked, noting such incidents are increasing and that his role is to ensure customer safety.
Pleaded guilty to public order offence. Sentence deferred for six months in September 2023 on condition of no further alcohol-related offences, which he abided by. Judge Gavin Doig noted it was shocking behaviour but hoped not to see him again given no prior history of offending.
Ruth Taylor

Ruth Taylor attacked her friend, who had allowed her to stay at his home in Sunderland, on two occasions. On December 17, 2023, she punched him in the face, bursting his lip, after he told her she was not welcome back. On January 5, 2024, around 11pm, she launched a brutal assault, stamping on his head, face, and ear repeatedly until she feared she had killed him, leaving him unconscious and covered in blood. She had consumed half a bottle of vodka that day. The victim suffered multiple abrasions and bruises to his face, bruising inside his cheek, swelling to his eyelids, bruising to both eyes which he couldn't open, burst blood vessels in both eyes, extensive swelling to his ear with the canal swollen shut, and 70% of the skin on the outer ear cartilage removed. Taylor called an ambulance using a false name, claiming he had slipped, and later threatened to slit his throat while ignoring paramedics. Blood was found throughout the flat, including on walls, floors, and a frying pan.
Pleaded guilty to GBH and battery. Has 123 previous convictions including for violence. Given a ten-year restraining order. Defence noted difficult childhood, history of domestic violence, and drug misuse issues.
Jamie Lees

On December 6, 2023, Jamie Lees entered the Fox and Hounds pub in Benwell, Newcastle, already acting aggressively towards staff. Upon being told the bar was closed and to leave, he approached a seated barmaid, attempted to grab her face and clothes causing a scratch, threw a drink at her, struck her on the back of the head while swinging his arms, raised clenched fists at a security guard who intervened, and pushed and shoved the guard.
Pleaded guilty to two counts of assault by beating. Has 46 prior offences, last in court December previous year. Stepped away from violent offending in last six years due to employment, but drank excessively on the night. Defence noted provocative language from complainant.
Keiron Kennedy

On November 15, 2023, Keiron Kennedy, 29, of Bristol Avenue, Donwell, Washington, approached two women walking their dog in the area of a graveyard on Hylton Castle Road, Sunderland. He initially appeared friendly, engaging in conversation and trying to stroke the pet, but suddenly turned violent, grabbing the dog lead and demanding 'Give us her or I'll hurt you'. He made several attempts to grab the dog, punching one woman in the face, hitting the second twice to the head and neck, putting two fingers into the first woman's mouth and pulling her to the ground, and punching the second woman again. The attack ended when a member of the public intervened and threatened to call police. Both victims suffered injuries including bruising, grazing, cuts, and swelling, and were left traumatised, with one feeling violated and scared, and the other requiring therapy for anxiety and sleep issues.
Pleaded guilty to two counts of attempted robbery. Has three previous convictions. Self-employed tattoo artist whose business will close due to imprisonment. Was drinking heavily at the time and has mental health issues affecting his behaviour.

On April 25, 2023, Connor Wade and another man attacked a stranger in a newsagents on Westoe Road, South Shields, punching him. The victim ran to a nearby chip shop to escape, but they followed and continued the assault with kicks and punches while he cowered in a corner, leaving him with bruising under his left eye and to his head and neck, a burst lip, and heavy bleeding. They ripped off a gold necklace belonging to his late father. The attackers had an axe, which was not used. The necklace was recovered after their arrest. The other man has since died.
Pleaded guilty to robbery and having a bladed article. Has 15 previous convictions. Recorder Nathan Moxon noted Wade was a full and active participant in the gratuitous and prolonged violence. Defence stated he is genuinely remorseful and recognises the need to address his issues. Former Nissan worker.
Christopher Johnson
Attempting to cause GBH with intent *

On January 6, 2024, Christopher Johnson entered the home of his friend in Pensher Street, Sunderland, through the unlocked rear door and found him in bed with a woman Johnson believed was his girlfriend. He punched the man under his right eye, then picked up a two-foot long metal baseball bat and struck him multiple times on the face above the eye, causing bleeding and pain. He also struck the woman once on the head with the bat, causing her to fall and briefly lose consciousness, then pushed her onto a sofa, slapped her four times, and briefly held her neck. After leaving, he smashed a kitchen window with the bat, causing £650 of damage. The man suffered a cut above his eye, and the woman had a large bump and bruise to her forehead.
Pleaded guilty to attempting to cause GBH with intent on the man, assault occasioning actual bodily harm on the woman and criminal damage. Given a restraining order. Has 27 previous convictions, including for assaults and robbery.
