Ashley Dowd
Breach of a Sexual Offences Prevention Order *
Sentence
15 months imprisonment
In June 2015, Ashley Dowd met a 14-year-old Rugby schoolgirl while she was still in her uniform, along with two other men and a 21-year-old woman. They went to Caldecott Park where Dowd set up a tent and spent the night with the girl. He was arrested and claimed he believed she was over 16 but admitted he had not checked. This was his fourth breach of a Sexual Offences Prevention Order imposed in 2009.
Changed plea to guilty on day of trial. Judge Richard Griffith-Jones said Dowd had 'really already been punished' and needed to 'grow up and be more careful'.
Antony Almond
Possession of heroin with intent to supply *
Sentence
2 years and 2 months imprisonment
In January 2019, police searched Antony Almond's home in Rugby and found foil with heroin residue. Almond admitted smoking heroin and revealed more: over 7 grams of heroin (enough for 72 £10 deals), digital scales, cannabis, and two smaller amounts worth £30. In a cupboard, officers discovered £3,390 in cash, which Almond claimed was from football betting. Phone messages showed he had been dealing since November 2018. Almond pleaded guilty to possession with intent to supply on the basis that he sold to a group of friends to support his own addiction, not to strangers.
Pleaded guilty to possessing heroin with intent to supply. 71 previous convictions, including three for heroin possession. Sold to addict friends to fund own habit. Judge stated it was not a lesser role case, motivated by financial gain.
Armel Houanda
Causing death by dangerous driving *
Sentence
2 years and 8 months imprisonment, banned from driving for 9 years and 4 months
Armel Houanda, 39, took his partner's hired Audi Q3 Sport without consent and drove with his 20-month-old daughter Amelie in a child seat on the B4114 Smockington Lane at Wolvey in June 2017. He took his hands off the steering wheel and turned round to attend to his daughter who had freed her arms from the restraint. He looked back for 1-3 seconds, causing the car to leave the road and crash into a fence, which penetrated the windscreen and struck Amelie, causing catastrophic head injuries. She died 2.5 hours later at University Hospital Coventry. He had only a provisional licence, had failed his theory test four times, and had no insurance. He pleaded guilty.
Pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving, taking a vehicle without consent, driving with no insurance or full licence. Previous conviction in 2010 for similar offences. Judge Anthony Potter commented: 'The sad fact is that there is nothing I can do by way of sentence which will reflect the loss of your daughter to her mother or to you.' Remorse expressed.
