Fraud by false representation *
Sentence
7 years imprisonment
Between 2016 and 2019, Gemma Kingsley, a 50-year-old former model from Beadnell, Northumberland, engaged in romance fraud by targeting recently divorced men on online dating sites. She deceived them with fabricated stories of inheriting fortunes up to £80 million, supported by falsified documents, fake bank meetings, and property viewings. Victims paid for her lavish lifestyle including expensive cars, hotels, holidays, clothing, and gambling, with one losing over £100,000 on furniture, debts, dental expenses, and a cancelled wedding deposit. She unauthorisedly used bank cards, set up betting accounts, and committed fraud against solicitors, lawyers, a bank, and others, including a £94,000 euro bill at an alpine resort (convicted in France) and a £120,000 Porsche purchase. Arrested in June 2023 on the Isle of Skye for speeding after failing to appear in court.
Pleaded guilty to six counts of theft, four counts of fraud by false representation, two counts of using a false instrument with intent that it will be accepted as genuine, and one count of being in possession of an article for use in fraud. Judge Jason Taylor KC described her as a manipulative con woman who targeted vulnerable men with false inheritance claims. No excuses offered for her actions despite mental health issues mentioned.
