Zegstroo attempted to avoid trial by feigning illness at York Hospital on the first day, delaying proceedings by one day, and again at Scarborough Hospital the following day, where he was arrested. He lied consistently to medical experts and the probation officer. In addition to the prison sentence, he was made subject to a lifelong sexual harm prevention order and placed on the sex offenders register for life.

On 26 January 2021, Jonathan Eaves was driving a bus northbound on the A19 near Easingwold when he approached a cyclist travelling in the same direction. As he overtook, the bus swerved to the right, making contact with the cyclist's handlebar grip, crossed the centre white lines, and collided with an oncoming Audi driven by Saskia Bets. Saskia, 27, suffered serious injuries and died in hospital the same day. The cyclist had been clearly visible, including a hi-vis jacket, reflective rucksack straps, and a flashing rear light. Police collision investigators determined the cyclist would have been visible to the bus driver for more than 30 seconds before the impact.

Joseph Derek Bailey, 22, from Scarborough, disclosed a private photo of a young woman in her underwear to several of her contacts in November 2018, threatening to send more unless money was paid. In February 2019, while staying at a couple's home in Sheffield, he stole a £140 watch and a credit card, using the card to spend over £20 on food and drink. He also failed to comply with sex offender notification requirements, having been previously convicted for having sex with an underage girl and given a suspended sentence. He failed to surrender to custody, missed a sentencing hearing, and was arrested after a car crash in Sheffield wearing the stolen watch.

He sped through a 40mph zone at over 70mph, overtook on blind bends on the wrong side of the road, and forced his way between a tractor and oncoming traffic, causing other motorists to swerve onto grass verges. He was arrested at the scene after mounting a kerb.

On 18 January, Tyler Walton was stopped by North Yorkshire Police officers in a vehicle on Parliament Street, Harrogate. A search revealed cash and digital scales. He was arrested and, while in custody, a further search found 14 wraps of crack cocaine and heroin concealed in his mouth. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced at York Crown Court.

On 11 March 2019, Victor Okumu, 38, targeted Bradley’s jewellers in Market Row, Northallerton. Wearing a blue boiler suit and a crash helmet with the visor down, he wedged the door open and jumped over the counter to confront staff. In the violent struggle, a staff member received a cut to her hand, which later required surgery, before Okumu fled with nearly £442,000 of jewellery. He was later arrested at a hotel in Fareham, Hampshire, where detectives found rings valued at £212,000. The remaining £229,640 worth of jewellery is still outstanding. The ordeal left staff feeling unsafe and with a fear of attack from men in helmets and work clothes.
The judge described Okumu as a “very dangerous man” who was likely to reoffend. Okumu had been planning the robbery for eight months.

On August 25, 2022, Thomas Horrigan was a passenger in a tipper van stopped by police in Scholla Lane, Northallerton, due to reports of road-traffic issues involving motorbikes. When questioned, he claimed to be in the area to 'enjoy the countryside', but he dropped an item and admitted it was cocaine. A search revealed 10.5 grams of cocaine worth up to £1,200 and three mobile phones. Analysis of the phones showed evidence of drug dealing. Horrigan refused to answer police questions. He later pleaded guilty to possession of a Class A drug with intent to supply. At the time of the offence, he was under investigation for supplying Class B drugs.

On 3 December 2025, Thomas Marshall attacked a woman at a property in York where people were drinking and taking drugs. He struck her up to 10 times around the head with an object believed to be a spanner during an argument about missing drugs, causing multiple facial fractures including a broken jaw, nose and eye socket, extensive swelling and black eyes. He was arrested the next day with a Stanley knife. He had 54 previous offences.
Pleaded guilty at last minute to wounding with intent. 54 previous offences including battery and knifepoint robbery. Judge noted he was lucky not to face murder charge. 10-year restraining order also imposed.

Mustafa Akgol, a chef of Redbarn Drive, Osbaldwick, forced his way into a stranger woman's bedsit on Redbarn Drive, York, on the evening of January 14, 2019. He sexually assaulted her after putting his foot in the door and following her to her bed, saying 'Ssssh' throughout. He returned later the same evening demanding a sex act, but she told him to leave. His DNA was found on her bra. He was identified in a police ID procedure. First trial in November abandoned; he went on the run but was arrested on a bench warrant. Second trial in February resulted in conviction.

Nathan Luke Collinson

On 16 October 2023, Nathan Luke Collinson sexually abused two 15-year-old girls on a residential road in Scarborough. He shouted at them, then kissed and groped both girls simultaneously, with the assault captured on CCTV. He later molested them further while sitting on a wall, followed them, and eventually entered a nearby house. The victims reported the abuse on 23 October, and Collinson was arrested on 13 November 2023, with cannabis found in his possession. While on bail, on 19 March 2024, he burgled a room at Scarborough's Grand Hotel, stealing £40 from a sleeping guest's wallet after attempting multiple room doors. He returned to the hotel on 30 March despite not being a guest, leading to his identification.

Neil Michael Stubbs, 27, of Kingsley Park Road, Harrogate, systematically groomed and abused a young girl over a prolonged period. He pestered the victim to send naked photos and on one occasion attempted to rape her, though she managed to kick him away. He confessed his fantasy of having sex with a virgin and told her to keep the abuse secret. Following his arrest, police found indecent images of children on his mobile phone, including Category A material. The victim suffered severe mental health decline, suicidal thoughts and two suicide attempts. The abuse had devastating consequences for her and her family. Protection officers visited his home and found the material on his laptop along with cleaning software and special browser. Police had searched his home in October 2020, seizing equipment.

Judge Simon Hickey highlighted deliberate use of wiping software, deeply embedded behaviour, flouting of court orders, and deemed him a danger to children with significant risk of reoffending. Police pursued the vehicle; a stinger was deployed, and the car stopped at Sutton Bank. All three were arrested and the bikes recovered.

Peter Turner

Peter Turner, formerly known as Father Gregory Carroll, was a monk at Ampleforth College, a Catholic boarding school in North Yorkshire, where he committed a series of sexual offences against young boys in the 1980s. The offences came to light decades later, leading to his conviction. In 2020, at York Crown Court, the then 80-year-old Turner admitted 11 counts of indecent assault, two counts of serious sexual assault, and one count of gross indecency with a child. The victims included three boys: the first, aged between 10 and 12, was subjected to indecent assault and a serious sexual assault in the 1980s at Ampleforth; the second, aged nine or 10, was indecently assaulted in the 1980s in Workington; and the third, aged between 10 and 12, endured gross indecency and indecent assault over three years starting in 1987, also in Workington. Turner was sentenced to 20 years and 10 months' imprisonment, with an extended year on licence. He died on 6 February 2025 at HMP Swaleside from a ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm.
