On the evening of 23 July 2021, Liam Davies approached Gary and Samantha Sipthorpe in Taunton as they walked home from a pub and asked for a lighter. When they said they did not have one, he punched Gary in the head multiple times, knocking him to the ground, and continued the attack while Gary lay defenceless. He pushed Samantha over when she intervened, threw Gary's phone across the road when he tried to call police, and fled after Samantha called 999. Gary sustained a bleed to the brain, detached retina, fractures to rib and nose, and continues to experience headaches and vision issues.
Pleaded guilty to GBH and battery.

Kyle Kennedy, 21, of Ansford, was arrested in Yeovil on 6 March 2023. He was found to be in possession of approximately 2,000 ecstasy (MDMA) tablets, ketamine, LSD and cocaine, which had a collective estimated worth of £50,500. Additionally, he was found to be in possession of £19,675 in cash.
Pleaded guilty to four counts of possession with intent to supply cocaine, MDMA, LSD and ketamine, plus four further counts of being concerned in the supply of the same illegal substances. He also admitted a ninth count of possession of criminal property.
Wayne Stanley Shortland

Wayne Stanley Shortland broke into the victim’s home in the St Johns Road area of Yeovil in April 2018 and stole a handbag containing cash and bank cards. He was identified as a suspect following a review of CCTV footage and enquiries made with local residents.
Aged 35, from Horsey Lane in Yeovil. Appeared at court where he admitted a charge of burglary and was sentenced for this and a previous offence for which he initially received a conditional discharge.

Valentinas Michailovas

Valentinas Michailovas, 24, of Marl Close in Yeovil, carried out two robberies against the same victim in Yeovil. On 15 August 2021, he led a male victim to a cash machine, forced him to withdraw money and took it. Two days later, he broke into the same victim’s home in the early hours, holding a knife, and forced him to withdraw more cash from an ATM. Over the night of 20/21 August 2021, a second victim in Yeovil reported his home broken into; Michailovas admitted handling stolen goods from this burglary.
Pleaded guilty to two counts of robbery, one count of handling stolen goods and one of fraudulently using someone else’s bank cards. Judge James Townsend noted previous convictions for similar offences in Lithuania. Given restraining orders to prevent contact with victims.

Sonny Sheppard, 31, of Blackwell Lane in London, was part of a group involved in a county lines operation bringing approximately 5kg of class A drugs from London to supply in Taunton, Bridgwater and Yeovil between August 2020 and February 2021. The drugs trade was worth hundreds of thousands of pounds. The convictions followed a joint operation between Avon and Somerset Police and the Metropolitan Police.
Guilty of two counts of conspiracy to supply class A drugs. Judge James Townsend described the operation as sophisticated and well-organised, bringing intimidation, misery and violence to young people in Somerset.
Stuart Marchmont
Inciting a child under 13 to engage in non-penetrative sexual activity *

Stuart Marchmont from Glastonbury incited a 12-year-old girl to engage in sexual activity via an online platform. He attempted to contact what he believed were five underage girls but was messaging specialist ROCU officers targeting online child exploiters. Also sentenced for causing non-penetrative sexual activity with a 15-year-old and making indecent images of the same child. Offences came to light on arrest in 2021. Formerly of Park Farm Road.
Found guilty after trial of 13 online sexual offences. Received indefinite sexual harm prevention order and placed on sexual offenders’ register.
Stuart Wells
Causing serious injury by dangerous driving *

3 years and 7 months imprisonment, disqualified from driving for 5 years
Stuart Wells, of Terrace View in Sherborne, Dorset, was driving his Ford Fiesta erratically along the A39 and B3151 prior to the collision last March near Somerton. Witnesses reported the vehicle drifting across the carriageway, veering onto the verge and wrong side of the road, and driving aggressively behind another car. His Ford Fiesta collided with the side of Tom Luxon’s Peugeot 307, causing it to spin out of control into a hedge, then collided head-on with Jackie Luxon’s Seat Ibiza. A VW Polo then collided at slow speed with the Seat. Jackie Luxon suffered a broken leg and lost her unborn child; her three-year-old daughter sustained a broken neck and was paralysed for four months.
Previously admitted causing the collision. Appeared on two counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and one count of dangerous driving.
Sylwester Mazur

Sylwester Mazur, of Henson Park, Chard, stabbed two men known to him while they were sat on benches in Fore Street throughout the evening on Christmas Day into the early hours of Boxing Day. An argument broke out about one of Mazur’s relatives, resulting in Mazur attacking one victim with a knife, causing injuries to his face and neck. The other victim attempted to intervene and suffered stab injuries to his leg and body, as well as injuries to his face and hand.
Admitted charges of causing grievous bodily harm and possession of a bladed article midway through a trial.

Thalia Banks, 20, of Hunstrete Lane in Compton Dando, was sentenced as part of a group supplying approximately 5kg of class A drugs from London into Taunton, Bridgwater and Yeovil between August 2020 and February 2021. The county lines operation was valued at hundreds of thousands of pounds.

The criminal activity spanned a six-month period between May and October 2020. He was arrested following a joint operation between Avon and Somerset Police and the Met Police.

Sarah Hewitt, 43, from Mansfield Road, Taunton, was arrested in April 2021. During a search of her address, officers seized drugs paraphernalia, a quantity of cash and heroin. Analysis of her phone records showed she was actively concerned with supplying drugs in Taunton for some time.
Pleaded guilty to being concerned in the supply of cocaine and heroin, possession of a class A drug and a class B drug. Made subject to a seven-year criminal behaviour order preventing her from owning or possessing a mobile phone or SIM card not registered in her name. Proceeds of Crime Act proceedings ongoing.
Scott Franks

Scott Franks, from St Austell in Cornwall, was stopped on the M5 in Somerset on Wednesday 23 March by Avon and Somerset Police officers. Inside the car they found a block of heroin, as well as a 1kg bag of cutting agent. The 50-year-old Franks had been acting as a courier for an organised crime group. He was transporting drugs between the Devon and Cornwall and Merseyside areas. He had made numerous trips over a six-month period.
Convicted of possession with intent to supply a class A drug and being concerned in the supply of a class A drug. Acting as a courier for an organised crime group.
Seamus Ford
Supply of crack cocaine and heroin *

Seamus Ford was involved in the supply of crack cocaine and heroin in Yeovil between 7 January and 2 February 2023 as part of a County Lines network targeting vulnerable people. He was arrested earlier this year at home in Eastleigh, Hampshire, following a joint operation between Avon & Somerset Police and the Metropolitan Police, where a phone used to deal the drugs was also found.

Joseph Parkinson
Causing grievous bodily harm with intent *

Joseph Parkinson, 24, was at the wheel of a red Honda Civic driven from Street to Glastonbury where it entered Pound Lane in June 2020. He and Abdirahman Boos saw a 19-year-old teenager; Boos jumped out and threatened the victim with a knife. As the teenager tried to run away, Parkinson struck him with the vehicle. They fled the scene leaving the victim with serious injuries requiring hospital treatment. Parkinson was arrested the same evening in Dorset following a police search.
Pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm with intent. Aged 24, of no fixed address.
Justin Wright
Possession with intent to supply Class A drugs *

Wright was arrested in October 2018 on the A303 in Somerset travelling from London towards Yeovil, after a significant quantity of heroin and crack were recovered from his car. Police identified Wright as working for a County Lines syndicate known as the NOVA line. He is believed to have been operating in Yeovil between April and October 2018, during which time he was making regular trips from London to supply heroin and cocaine.
Pleaded guilty to possession with intent to supply Class A drugs.
Kevin Sheppard

Kevin Sheppard, 50, of Fletching Road in Greenwich, was part of a group that brought approximately 5kg of class A drugs from London to supply in Taunton, Bridgwater and Yeovil between August 2020 and February 2021 via county lines. The operation was worth hundreds of thousands of pounds and targeted by Avon and Somerset Police and Metropolitan Police.

Khalid Mirghani

Khalid Mirghani, of Dormers Rise, Ealing, was concerned in the supply of cocaine and heroin as part of a County Lines operation which supplied over 1.6kg of class A drugs in Somerset last year. The drugs had a street value of around £160,000. The charges followed a joint investigation by Avon and Somerset Police and the Metropolitan Police.
Pleaded guilty. An additional criminal behaviour order was granted, preventing him from visiting Somerset and carrying more than £50 in cash. Aged 26.

Karl Pitcher sexually assaulted four girls on numerous occasions over a 10-year period between 1993 and 2003. The victims were aged between two and 14 years old. In 2020, two victims came forward, leading to enquiries that identified two further cases reported in the 2000s which had previously been investigated but not prosecuted.
Found guilty at trial on 16 March of 11 counts of indecent assault. Also given a Sexual Harm Prevention Order and ordered to register as a sex offender for life. Recorder Judge Millard described him as a predator of young girls with no victim empathy.
Jeffery Hughes

Jeffery Hughes, 45, of John Street, Bridgwater, was involved in the theft and dishonest handling of property including quad bikes, trailers, a 4x4 vehicle and a motorhome with a combined value of circa £45,000. The items were taken from farms across west Somerset during the first half of 2020.

Gareth Hayward, 19, of Coleridge Square, Bridgwater, was involved in the theft and dishonest handling of property including quad bikes, trailers, a 4x4 vehicle and a motorhome with a combined value of circa £45,000. The items were taken from farms across west Somerset during the first half of 2020.

Gary Coombes, 58, traded as Bridgwater Heating and repeatedly targeted an elderly couple at their Bridgwater home. He defrauded them of £13,000 by grossly overcharging for boiler service and maintenance work as well as general home maintenance. The fraud was uncovered when the victim’s daughter became suspicious and reported him to Heart of the South West Trading Standards Service.
Pleaded guilty to seven counts of fraud. Judge Zeb commented: 'On each occasion you excessively overcharged, and rendered invoices that were grossly overinflated, false, and not reflective of the work required or done. In all that time, [the victims] came to know you, trusted you, and paid without question.' Repeat offender.
Christopher Jansons
False imprisonment and threats to kill *

Christopher Jansons covertly recorded his wife discussing their relationship with a friend on the evening of 26 May 2018 before confronting her, taking her phone, preventing her from leaving the bedroom, and threatening to kill her while she lay on the floor. Unbeknown to him, she called police on another phone, provided her address, and left the line open. Officers arrested him as he stood over her, captured on body-worn video shown to the judge.
Pleaded guilty to falsely imprisoning and threatening to kill his wife.
Christopher Rost-Aldridge
Non-dwelling burglary and fraud by false representation *

Christopher Rost-Aldridge, 31, from Highbridge, committed several non-dwelling burglaries in Bridgwater. On Thursday 22 April, he entered the staffing area of a bakery and stole a purse. Four days later, he committed a similar offence at a joinery firm, stealing clothes and bank cards. He used the bank cards to purchase items worth £37.49 the same day.
Pleaded guilty to two counts of non-dwelling burglary and one of fraud by false representation. Asked for a further six non-dwelling burglaries, four thefts and one fraud offence to be taken into consideration. Described as a prolific offender.

Daniel Vaughan, 42, of West Hendford, Yeovil, was arrested by Operation Remedy officers earlier in 2021 and charged with burglary at a residential address in Avon Close, Yeovil, and attempting to gain access to a property in Percy Road, Yeovil on Friday 2 April. He admitted to two further dwelling burglaries, a theft from a vehicle, and a shoplifting offence.

David Bailey
Dangerous driving *

David Bailey, 39, of no fixed address, who was already disqualified from driving, took a Land Rover Discovery from a farm in Bruton overnight on 30-31 August 2020. On 1 September 2020, an on-duty officer in a marked police car in the centre of Yeovil saw the Land Rover being driven towards him on the wrong side of the road. The officer took action to avoid a collision. Bailey sped off, forcing members of the public to take evasive action. The vehicle was later found abandoned in the Westfield area of Yeovil and Bailey was arrested.
Pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, taking a vehicle without the owner’s consent, driving while disqualified and driving without insurance. Disqualified from driving for 30 months. Described as a prolific offender in the Yeovil area.
David Pearce
Non-recent sexual activity with a child *

In the early 2000s, Pearce groomed his then 15-year-old victim. He sent her text messages and gifts over many weeks before sexually abusing her. The victim was threatened by Pearce and told to keep the abuse a secret. She finally contacted the police in 2019 and an investigation was launched.
Found guilty of two counts of non-recent sexual activity with a child.
Bartosz Gorczyca
Being concerned in the supply of cocaine, ketamine and MDMA *

Bartosz Gorczyca, 21, of Yeovil, was arrested in Yeovil on 6 March 2023. He was in possession of 155 ecstasy (MDMA) tablets, ketamine and cocaine, which was estimated to be worth approximately £1,560 to £1,880 in total.
Pleaded guilty to being concerned in the supply of cocaine, ketamine and MDMA, plus a fourth charge of possession of criminal property.
Anton Hull
Causing death by dangerous driving *

Anton Hull, of Galhampton, filmed himself minutes before crashing at Anchor Hill near Wincanton in August 2022, killing 29-year-old Sarah Baker. He had consumed rum and lager at a South Cadbury pub, was refused service for being drunk, but drove anyway. The crash occurred just after 11pm. Witnesses reported he stank of booze. A blood test at Yeovil District Hospital estimated he was one-and-a-half to twice over the legal drink-drive limit. He was arrested after receiving medical treatment.
Admitted causing death by dangerous driving. Also handed a nine-year driving ban and ordered to complete an extended re-test before regaining licence. His Honour Judge Edward Burgess said: 'Your dangerous driving killed Sarah Baker, having made a selfish decision to drive despite warnings, knowing full well you were too drunk to do so. Your driving was significantly impaired, and you used your phone to record yourself driving in an intoxicated state. Words cannot do justice to the enormity and needless tragedy of this incident. You have no one to blame but yourself for your injuries.' Sentence later extended to nine years and three months by the Court of Appeal.

Sexual activity with a child *

Ayden Reader linked up with a teenage girl on social media in 2021 and engaged in sexual activity with her. Police seized devices finding 882 category A, 950 category B and 2,543 category C indecent images. While under investigation in Kent, he breached Interim SHPO by messaging young girls and accessing undeclared devices, leading to further images found: 830 category A, 973 category B and 610 category C.
Pleaded guilty to 19 charges including sexual activity with a child, taking, making, possessing and distributing indecent images. Judge granted indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order and lifetime restraining order banning contact with victim.
Adam Harding

On 11 September 2019, Adam Harding committed two burglaries in Burnham. First, he targeted a woman with limited mobility on Abingdon Street. He knocked at around 7am, returned later, broke in through an insecure rear door, threatened her in bed demanding money, searched drawers and under the bed, then left. The victim identified him. Later at 5.50pm, he broke into a property in Rosewood Avenue via an open rear window on the first floor. The owner heard a bang, confronted him in her rear bedroom, and he left through the same window. CCTV footage and a witness identified him.
Found guilty of two burglaries after a three-day trial. The 42-year-old from Highbridge knowingly targeted lone and vulnerable elderly women. Both victims were left traumatised, feeling unsafe in their own home.
Abdirahman Boos
Causing grievous bodily harm with intent *

Abdirahman Boos, 30, was the passenger in a red Honda Civic driven by Joseph Parkinson from Street to Glastonbury, entering Pound Lane in June 2020.
