Sapphire Dennis, 30, of Ford Lane, Ferndown, was arrested on July 17, 2023 at Matthew Appleyard’s Milborne Port home. Officers seized 210g of cocaine worth £17,230 and over £42,500 in criminal property. She was sentenced after dealing cocaine for more than two years.

Sarah Hewitt, 43, from Mansfield Road, Taunton, was arrested in April 2021. During a search of her address, officers seized drugs paraphernalia, a quantity of cash and heroin. Analysis of her phone records showed she was actively concerned with supplying drugs in Taunton for some time.
Pleaded guilty to being concerned in the supply of cocaine and heroin, possession of a class A drug and a class B drug. Made subject to a seven-year criminal behaviour order preventing her from owning or possessing a mobile phone or SIM card not registered in her name. Proceeds of Crime Act proceedings ongoing.

Scott Franks, from St Austell in Cornwall, was stopped on the M5 in Somerset on Wednesday 23 March by Avon and Somerset Police officers. Inside the car they found a block of heroin, as well as a 1kg bag of cutting agent. The 50-year-old Franks had been acting as a courier for an organised crime group. He was transporting drugs between the Devon and Cornwall and Merseyside areas. He had made numerous trips over a six-month period.

Seamus Ford was involved in the supply of crack cocaine and heroin in Yeovil between 7 January and 2 February 2023 as part of a County Lines network targeting vulnerable people. He was arrested earlier this year at home in Eastleigh, Hampshire, following a joint operation between Avon & Somerset Police and the Metropolitan Police, where a phone used to deal the drugs was also found.

Stuart Marchmont from Glastonbury incited a 12-year-old girl to engage in sexual activity via an online platform. He attempted to contact what he believed were five underage girls but was messaging specialist ROCU officers targeting online child exploiters. Also sentenced for causing non-penetrative sexual activity with a 15-year-old and making indecent images of the same child. Offences came to light on arrest in 2021. Formerly of Park Farm Road.

Stuart Wells
Causing serious injury by dangerous driving *

Stuart Wells, of Terrace View in Sherborne, Dorset, was driving his Ford Fiesta erratically along the A39 and B3151 prior to the collision last March near Somerton. Witnesses reported the vehicle drifting across the carriageway, veering onto the verge and wrong side of the road, and driving aggressively behind another car. His Ford Fiesta collided with the side of Tom Luxon’s Peugeot 307, causing it to spin out of control into a hedge, then collided head-on with Jackie Luxon’s Seat Ibiza. A VW Polo then collided at slow speed with the Seat. Jackie Luxon suffered a broken leg and lost her unborn child; her three-year-old daughter sustained a broken neck and was paralysed for four months.
Previously admitted causing the collision. Appeared on two counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and one count of dangerous driving.
Sylwester Mazur

Sylwester Mazur, of Henson Park, Chard, stabbed two men known to him while they were sat on benches in Fore Street throughout the evening on Christmas Day into the early hours of Boxing Day. An argument broke out about one of Mazur’s relatives, resulting in Mazur attacking one victim with a knife, causing injuries to his face and neck. The other victim attempted to intervene and suffered stab injuries to his leg and body, as well as injuries to his face and hand.
Admitted charges of causing grievous bodily harm and possession of a bladed article midway through a trial.

Thalia Banks, 20, of Hunstrete Lane in Compton Dando, was sentenced as part of a group supplying approximately 5kg of class A drugs from London into Taunton, Bridgwater and Yeovil between August 2020 and February 2021. The county lines operation was valued at hundreds of thousands of pounds.

Joseph Parkinson

Joseph Parkinson, 24, was at the wheel of a red Honda Civic driven from Street to Glastonbury where it entered Pound Lane in June 2020. He and Abdirahman Boos saw a 19-year-old teenager; Boos jumped out and threatened the victim with a knife. As the teenager tried to run away, Parkinson struck him with the vehicle. They fled the scene leaving the victim with serious injuries requiring hospital treatment. Parkinson was arrested the same evening in Dorset following a police search.
Pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm with intent. Aged 24, of no fixed address.
Justin Wright
Possession with intent to supply Class A drugs *

Wright was arrested in October 2018 on the A303 in Somerset travelling from London towards Yeovil, after a significant quantity of heroin and crack were recovered from his car. Police identified Wright as working for a County Lines syndicate known as the NOVA line. He is believed to have been operating in Yeovil between April and October 2018, during which time he was making regular trips from London to supply heroin and cocaine.

John Toms, of Oldford, Frome, committed a series of sexual offences against four children in the 1980s and 1990s. The victims were all around six years old when the abuse started. He was arrested in early July after a member of the public saw him on a bus trying to take photos of a girl. Officers seized computer equipment containing indecent images of children. He admitted during police interviews that he was sexually attracted to young children.
Admitted 22 charges. Judge described him as having ‘an extreme and perverted interest in young girls’ and said he’d ‘caused untold damage to his victims’.

The operation was worth hundreds of thousands of pounds and targeted by Avon and Somerset Police and Metropolitan Police.

Khalid Mirghani, of Dormers Rise, Ealing, was concerned in the supply of cocaine and heroin as part of a County Lines operation which supplied over 1.6kg of class A drugs in Somerset last year. The drugs had a street value of around £160,000. The charges followed a joint investigation by Avon and Somerset Police and the Metropolitan Police.
Pleaded guilty. An additional criminal behaviour order was granted, preventing him from visiting Somerset and carrying more than £50 in cash. Aged 26.

Kisella Hillman, 28, from London, abused her position as a carer for an 85-year-old victim who suffers from Alzheimer’s. She stole a total of £51,500 from the victim, who lived near Frome, between November and December 2013. Following a six-day trial at Taunton Crown Court, she was convicted of three counts of theft.

Kwesi Williams of Wandsworth, London was involved in 'county lines' drug supply to Bridgwater, Somerset. He admitted being concerned in the supply of heroin, crack cocaine and cannabis in April and May 2021. Police seized crack cocaine, heroin, cannabis, mobile phones, cash and cutting agents at two London addresses linked to him during a joint operation between the Metropolitan Police and Avon & Somerset Police.
Admitted being concerned in the supply of heroin, crack cocaine and cannabis. Jailed for five years and 30 weeks for heroin and crack cocaine charges, with three years concurrent for cannabis. Time on remand taken into account. Judge Paul Cook noted seizures of drugs, phones, cash and cutting agents.

Kyle Kennedy, 21, of Ansford, was arrested in Yeovil on 6 March 2023. He was found to be in possession of approximately 2,000 ecstasy (MDMA) tablets, ketamine, LSD and cocaine, which had a collective estimated worth of £50,500. Additionally, he was found to be in possession of £19,675 in cash.
Pleaded guilty to four counts of possession with intent to supply cocaine, MDMA, LSD and ketamine, plus four further counts of being concerned in the supply of the same illegal substances. He also admitted a ninth count of possession of criminal property.
Michael Sellings

Michael Sellings, 63, of Horsey Lane in Yeovil, committed 12 offences between November 2016 and June 2021, including three counts of raping a child under the age of 13, one count of causing/inciting a girl under 13 to engage in sexual activity, three counts of making indecent photographs/pseudo-photographs of a child, three counts of taking an indecent photograph/pseudo-photograph of a child, one count of possessing extreme pornographic images, and one count of possessing prohibited images of a child. Arrested following intelligence; police seized 11 items from his home containing over 7,000 images including 1,751 category A (most serious), plus 28 images he took himself of two children under 13.
Pleaded guilty to 12 offences. Judge noted his offending caused 'absolute devastation' to his two victims. Also given a Sexual Harm Prevention Order.
Mark John Butcher

Mark John Butcher, a 36-year-old man from Evercreech, Somerset, was sentenced to four years and seven months in prison at Taunton Crown Court on April 12, 2019, after pleading guilty to three counts of sexual assault. The attacks occurred within a three-month span in 2018, targeting vulnerable women in the Street and Shepton Mallet areas. The first incident took place on June 5, 2018, on Somerton Road in Street, where Butcher pushed a 24-year-old woman against a wall and sexually assaulted her. The victim shouted for him to stop, prompting Butcher to flee the scene. Avon and Somerset Police investigated the report and linked it to subsequent assaults. On July 19, 2018, an 18-year-old woman was attacked shortly after leaving a supermarket. Butcher grabbed her around the throat and pulled her backwards during the assault. She managed to fight him off and run home, where her mother called the police. The third assault occurred on August 31, 2018, in Dark Lane, Shepton Mallet, around 7pm. While jogging, a 20-year-old woman was grabbed by the throat and pulled to the ground by Butcher. She resisted, kicking him to escape, and later provided police with details of a Peugeot car with an 'S' prefix registration plate seen nearby, which aided in identifying the suspect. Following his release, Butcher will be on licence for three years and placed on the Sex Offenders' Register for life.

Matthew Appleyard, 31, of Milborne Port, was arrested on July 17, 2023 at his home in Combe Hill. He was sentenced for dealing cocaine for more than two years.

On the evening of 23 July 2021, Liam Davies approached Gary and Samantha Sipthorpe in Taunton as they walked home from a pub and asked for a lighter. When they said they did not have one, he punched Gary in the head multiple times, knocking him to the ground, and continued the attack while Gary lay defenceless. He pushed Samantha over when she intervened, threw Gary's phone across the road when he tried to call police, and fled after Samantha called 999. Gary sustained a bleed to the brain, detached retina, fractures to rib and nose, and continues to experience headaches and vision issues.
Pleaded guilty to GBH and battery.

Karl Pitcher sexually assaulted four girls on numerous occasions over a 10-year period between 1993 and 2003. The victims were aged between two and 14 years old. In 2020, two victims came forward, leading to enquiries that identified two further cases reported in the 2000s which had previously been investigated but not prosecuted.
Found guilty at trial on 16 March of 11 counts of indecent assault. Also given a Sexual Harm Prevention Order and ordered to register as a sex offender for life. Recorder Judge Millard described him as a predator of young girls with no victim empathy.

Ionut Voicu, a 36-year-old from Taunton, Somerset, engaged in online sexual communications with an individual he believed to be a 13-year-old girl, intending to meet for sexual activity. The 'girl' was an undercover officer from Avon and Somerset Police; he was arrested upon attempting to meet. He admitted to five counts of causing a child to watch or look at an image of sexual activity, two counts of having sexual communication with a child, and one count of attempting to arrange or facilitate a child sex offence.
Pleaded guilty to eight offences at Taunton Crown Court on 14 May 2021. Originally received a community order; sentence later increased to 3 years 4 months imprisonment by the Court of Appeal.

Dustin Gandley
Sexual assault of a child under 13 *

Dustin Gandley, aged 37 and residing in Hamp Brook Way, Bridgwater, sexually assaulted a girl under 13 years old on 11 separate occasions over a four-year period. The abuse came to light when the victim disclosed it to her mother, who reported it to the police. At Taunton Crown Court, Gandley, a Jehovah’s Witness and cabinet-maker from the Highbridge area, pleaded guilty to ten charges of sexual assault against a female under 13 and one charge of inciting the victim to engage in sexual activity. The prosecuting barrister noted Gandley’s reluctance to admit the full extent of his actions due to concerns about his standing within his religious community. The victim’s mother spoke after sentencing, expressing devastation and urging other parents to watch for signs of abuse such as changes in a child’s mood.
Pleaded guilty to ten counts of sexual assault of a female under 13 and one count of inciting the victim to engage in sexual activity. Previously of good character with no prior convictions; lost his job, home and marriage as a consequence. Judge Graham Hume Jones remarked that Gandley took advantage of the child to gratify his sexual needs and that the behaviour had a serious effect on the child and her family.

Gary Coombes, 58, traded as Bridgwater Heating and repeatedly targeted an elderly couple at their Bridgwater home. He defrauded them of £13,000 by grossly overcharging for boiler service and maintenance work as well as general home maintenance. The fraud was uncovered when the victim’s daughter became suspicious and reported him to Heart of the South West Trading Standards Service.
Pleaded guilty to seven counts of fraud. Judge Zeb commented: 'On each occasion you excessively overcharged, and rendered invoices that were grossly overinflated, false, and not reflective of the work required or done. In all that time, [the victims] came to know you, trusted you, and paid without question.' Repeat offender.
David Bailey
Dangerous driving *

David Bailey, 39, of no fixed address, who was already disqualified from driving, took a Land Rover Discovery from a farm in Bruton overnight on 30-31 August 2020. On 1 September 2020, an on-duty officer in a marked police car in the centre of Yeovil saw the Land Rover being driven towards him on the wrong side of the road. The officer took action to avoid a collision. Bailey sped off, forcing members of the public to take evasive action. The vehicle was later found abandoned in the Westfield area of Yeovil and Bailey was arrested.
Pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, taking a vehicle without the owner’s consent, driving while disqualified and driving without insurance. Disqualified from driving for 30 months. Described as a prolific offender in the Yeovil area.
David Byrne
Sexual abuse of boys *

David Byrne abused three boys over several years in the mid-1980s in the Langport area of Somerset. Some offences were committed when victims were under 13. The offences involved touching the naked children. Victims suffered long-term psychological issues. Byrne, of The Hill, Huish Episcopi, Langport, was convicted after victims came forward.
Convicted after a trial of six offences. Has a history of similar offending and was previously jailed for six years in 2018. Will serve half in custody and half on licence. Subject to the sex offenders register and indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order. Sentenced by Judge James Townsend.
David Pearce

In the early 2000s, Pearce groomed his then 15-year-old victim. He sent her text messages and gifts over many weeks before sexually abusing her. The victim was threatened by Pearce and told to keep the abuse a secret. She finally contacted the police in 2019 and an investigation was launched.

He admitted to two further dwelling burglaries, a theft from a vehicle, and a shoplifting offence.

Clayton Ball, a holiday camp chef, targeted two 15-year-old girls in 2005 while working near Burnham. He used violence and bondage, tying them up and raping them in his caravan. One victim was tied with a belt and blindfolded; the other was tied with a belt and he attempted to restrain her with handcuffs. He fled before trial, was convicted in his absence at Taunton Crown Court, and later arrested. He also admitted possessing indecent images of children.

Bartosz Gorczyca, 21, of Yeovil, was arrested in Yeovil on 6 March 2023. He was in possession of 155 ecstasy (MDMA) tablets, ketamine and cocaine, which was estimated to be worth approximately £1,560 to £1,880 in total.
Pleaded guilty to being concerned in the supply of cocaine, ketamine and MDMA, plus a fourth charge of possession of criminal property.
Basil Al-Mudalal
Possessing indecent images of children *

Basil Al-Mudalal, of Silver Road, Street, Somerset, a convicted sex offender subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) since 2017 banning devices that do not retain internet history, downloaded the 'DuckDuckGo' app on his phone which breaches the SHPO. Police found over 1,000 indecent images and movies of children being sexually abused, including category A material and abuse of children as young as four, on a hard drive connected to his TV. Police visited his home on February 22, 2022. He has prior convictions for possessing indecent images.
Admitted three offences of possessing indecent images of children and breaching the terms of his Sexual Harm Prevention Order. Assessed as high risk of reoffending. Will serve half in prison and rest on licence. Remains subject to SHPO and sex offender register for 10 years.

False imprisonment and threats to kill *

Christopher Jansons covertly recorded his wife discussing their relationship with a friend on the evening of 26 May 2018 before confronting her, taking her phone, preventing her from leaving the bedroom, and threatening to kill her while she lay on the floor. Unbeknown to him, she called police on another phone, provided her address, and left the line open. Officers arrested him as he stood over her, captured on body-worn video shown to the judge.
Pleaded guilty to falsely imprisoning and threatening to kill his wife.

Non-dwelling burglary and fraud by false representation *

Christopher Rost-Aldridge, 31, from Highbridge, committed several non-dwelling burglaries in Bridgwater. On Thursday 22 April, he entered the staffing area of a bakery and stole a purse. Four days later, he committed a similar offence at a joinery firm, stealing clothes and bank cards. He used the bank cards to purchase items worth £37.49 the same day.
Pleaded guilty to two counts of non-dwelling burglary and one of fraud by false representation. Asked for a further six non-dwelling burglaries, four thefts and one fraud offence to be taken into consideration. Described as a prolific offender.

Seven members of a county lines drug gang transported Class A drugs including heroin and crack cocaine from the West Midlands and sold them on the streets of Bridgwater. Activities disrupted by police after public reports of open drug sales. Officers identified transaction locations, stopped suspicious individuals, traced phone lines used to coordinate sales. Nine warrants executed at addresses in Bridgwater, Wolverhampton and London led to arrests of four men and three women, recovery of significant sums of Class A drugs, cash, weapons, ammunition and a stab vest.
Told to attend a drug rehabilitation course. Part of a county lines drug gang transporting Class A drugs from the West Midlands to Bridgwater.
Anton Hull
Causing death by dangerous driving *

Anton Hull, of Galhampton, filmed himself minutes before crashing at Anchor Hill near Wincanton in August 2022, killing 29-year-old Sarah Baker. He had consumed rum and lager at a South Cadbury pub, was refused service for being drunk, but drove anyway. The crash occurred just after 11pm. Witnesses reported he stank of booze. A blood test at Yeovil District Hospital estimated he was one-and-a-half to twice over the legal drink-drive limit. He was arrested after receiving medical treatment.
Admitted causing death by dangerous driving. Also handed a nine-year driving ban and ordered to complete an extended re-test before regaining licence. His Honour Judge Edward Burgess said: 'Your dangerous driving killed Sarah Baker, having made a selfish decision to drive despite warnings, knowing full well you were too drunk to do so. Your driving was significantly impaired, and you used your phone to record yourself driving in an intoxicated state. Words cannot do justice to the enormity and needless tragedy of this incident. You have no one to blame but yourself for your injuries.' Sentence later extended to nine years and three months by the Court of Appeal.
Arthur Waite

Arthur Waite, 65, from Taunton, Somerset, a former church volunteer, groomed two underage girls aged 13 and 15 between 2004 and 2005. He filmed himself having sexual intercourse with them using a hidden static camera in his master bedroom, capturing 34 scenes later compiled onto videotapes. He hid the tapes and sex aids in a hedge outside his home on Eastleigh Road. His crimes came to light on 26 August 2005 when staff at a photography shop alerted police after he brought photos of the victims for development. Police searches recovered the tapes. Waite covered his head in shame as he was led into court. He pleaded guilty to nine counts, including one of rape.

Judge Stephen O'Malley described it as a 'grave breach of trust'. To serve remainder under licence after three years, subject to a sexual offences prevention order and indefinite sex offenders register notification.
Ayden Reader

Ayden Reader linked up with a teenage girl on social media in 2021 and engaged in sexual activity with her. Police seized devices finding 882 category A, 950 category B and 2,543 category C indecent images. While under investigation in Kent, he breached Interim SHPO by messaging young girls and accessing undeclared devices, leading to further images found: 830 category A, 973 category B and 610 category C.
Pleaded guilty to 19 charges including sexual activity with a child, taking, making, possessing and distributing indecent images. Judge granted indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order and lifetime restraining order banning contact with victim.
Abdirahman Boos
Causing grievous bodily harm with intent *

Abdirahman Boos, 30, was the passenger in a red Honda Civic driven by Joseph Parkinson from Street to Glastonbury, entering Pound Lane in June 2020. They saw a 19-year-old teenager; Boos jumped from the vehicle and threatened the victim with a knife. As the teenager tried to run away, he was struck by the Honda Civic. They fled the scene leaving the victim with serious injuries requiring hospital treatment. Boos was arrested the same evening in Dorset following a police search.
Admitted one count of possession of a knife in a public place. Found guilty after trial of causing grievous bodily harm with intent. Aged 30, of no fixed address.
Adam Harding

On 11 September 2019, Adam Harding committed two burglaries in Burnham. First, he targeted a woman with limited mobility on Abingdon Street. He knocked at around 7am, returned later, broke in through an insecure rear door, threatened her in bed demanding money, searched drawers and under the bed, then left. The victim identified him. Later at 5.50pm, he broke into a property in Rosewood Avenue via an open rear window on the first floor. The owner heard a bang, confronted him in her rear bedroom, and he left through the same window. CCTV footage and a witness identified him.
Found guilty of two burglaries after a three-day trial. The 42-year-old from Highbridge knowingly targeted lone and vulnerable elderly women. Both victims were left traumatised, feeling unsafe in their own home.
